Craigslist is useless now

Sarra

So, I've got a Subaru. I need to move to another state. The Subaru will NOT get me, and all of my stuff, all the way out there. I need a truck.

The local vehicle market is wrecked. The fires, pandemic, and all of the BS those have brought, has created a situation where there are no vehicles for sale locally that are worth buying.

But I've also noticed something. A car dealership in Portland, 300 miles away, has been advertising on EVERY CL city/area from Portland, to Seattle, to central Cali. In fact, several dealers in Portland are doing this. I am looking for local vehicles, I have no interest in driving to Portland to buy a vehicle. I do, however, have relatives in SF, and I WOULD be willing to drive there to get a car. However, the Portland seller is SPAMMING SF. I put in a SF zip code, and these jerks have also put a SF zip code, so you cannot filter the results out. They DO NOT have a location in SF.

I've spent literally hours flagging all of their posts. I've even emailed CL's complaints thing, and was completely ignored.

Someone should write a bot that grabs their ads, then reposts them, but with a stupid low price on every vehicle. (I mean, no, but it would be kinda funny if they got flooded with people wanting to spend $8,000 on a truck they have listed for $28,000).

So, is there ANY recourse? Maybe I'll just stop using CL entirely. Used cars is about the ONLY thing they're useful for anymore, and even that isn't really 'useful' anymore.

We get adds from dealerships in Portland and Seattle all the time on Anchorage and even Fairbanks Craigslist.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Nope. whoever owns CL, are totally deaf to the problems there, which is why scammers are legion on the site.

When I was looking for a used car, I had to choose "for sale by owner only" to filter out the far away shit.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Eh, I kinda figured.

I think I'll just give up on it, then. I'll go to a local friend of the family who finds used cars, and see what he can find for me.

Craigslist is not the best resource for finding used cars unless you're looking for a cheap rust bucket.

Look for listings on:

AutoTrader.com

Cars.com

eBay Motors

Autotempest.com

Autotrader doesn't have anything within 500 miles of me. It seems to be more aimed at East Coast? I don't know. I can put in 2001-2010 diesel, and I get 3 results within 300 miles, so it's really not useful.

I will give cars.com and autotempest a shot, but I'm not holding my breath.

The only cars you would want to buy from CL are old beaters that would get you from A to B and that's it. So like old flip Honda Accords. I would go as far as recommending Carmax which honestly isn't that bad, their bumper to bumper warranty is pretty handy. Like even if it's something the dealer isn't willing to fix under warranty, they'll often pay out of pocket to make sure you're well taken care of.

Carmax's website is ridiculously slow. @___@

The closest dealer is also a really long way away from me.

And they don't have anything I'm looking for.

I've also been looking for a Taco with a stick shift and 4X4, and those are impossible to find right now. 😧

Anything without a 3.5 v6 in it. The 3.4, 4.0, or 2.7 would be fine. I don't care if it has a frame recall or not.

Honestly, you could just combine the two (smaller pickup, diesel) and grab one of the Colorados that had the diesel in them. They're pretty solid trucks.

I have yet to see one pop up at all in any search I've done...

Or is this a 2020 thing? I can't afford anything new, that's for sure.

Depends what you consider new, they're from 2016ish.

You could look into diesel Grand Cherokees as well. Beds in small pickups aren't that large so realistically you don't lose out on a ton of capacity of a pickup vs seats down in an SUV. Really, though, why not just rent a trailer?

Oof. I worked on a Grand Cherokee with a Diesel in it, that's one vehicle I won't touch.

Yeah, 2016 is not too bad. I found a few in the 250 mile radius I can manage, gonna look at some reviews on them. The older Pre 2012's had diesels as well, but they were Isuzu rebadges, which I'm not opposed to.

If I could find a 2005 or so F250 with the long bed, I could move all of my belongings at once, without even needing a trailer, and have a truck I could use for work after moving.

You can filter out dealers on Craigslist and just see listings from individuals. You can always use autotrader.com or similar sites to search dealer inventories.

I don't think the pre '12s had diesel engines in NA.

If you're not terribly picky about shape, check out both government auctions and CoPart. You can easily grab one of those that has vandalism, hail, or light body damage that's been written off because the repair cost outweighs the replacement value. The vandalism ones are the best if you're handy, since it's usually just steering column damage, or sometimes interior bits and pieces that are super simple to replace.

The 6.0 can be bulletproofed. I'm kinda screwed on the newer stuff, since the 6.7 is ridiculously expensive, and the 6.4 is horrendous compared to the 6.0.

But yes, I would only go for a 7.3. Or a 6.7 if I could ever find one that isn't $40,000. I also don't mind the 5.9/6.7 cummins, though I would avoid any older Duramax.

I learned how to drive in a 1995 T100. I would totally get a Tundra if they had had a stick shift option, but Toyota was retarded and didn't offer one. >_> I REALLY hate automatics, especially hooked up to a V8 gas motor, it's like taking something really awesome and crapping all over it 😧

"Can be" being the key phrasing. They can also be a total nightmare. My dad was a mechanic at Ford for decades. He wouldn't buy one.

Dodge pickups are great powertrain wise but tend to fall apart in other places. The real old ones are beauties though.

Tundras are nice but they too had the frame issue. It's really not something you should ignore. It'll destroy the truck. The main frame rusts, and buckles in on itself.

Haha, I'm the opposite. I hate manuals. Since COVID I've been plotting a future LS build mated to a BMW DCT transmission.

I don't know what it is about this area, but most of the 6.0's are either not abused and still reasonably reliable, or abused and already in the junk heap.

Either way, I'm sticking with a 7.3. And yeah, it's a great engine in a really cheaply made body for the Dodges. The new common rail stuff is pretty amazing, though. Wish I could get a 6.7. >_> Ah well.

What year Yotas had the frame issues?

1995 - 2004, and 20011 - 2017.

Mostly for cold weather states, but it covers half of them, so unless you can 100% verify that the truck was only a Cali truck it's worth looking into.

I know the US has a huge problem with flood salvage vehicles being given unbranded titles and sold in states on the west coast, so it wouldn't surprise me if these made their way there too.

Heh. My dad's T100 is a 1995. I don't think it has any rust, though, since it's pretty much never left the area. One owner vehicle. But it's RWD, and useless offroad and in the snow.

I'm going to give a shot to the guy local to me that finds vehicles. There's a chance I can find a good truck through him, so I think that will be my best bet.

And FYI, I've been looking on Lithia's website as well, and they have absolutely nothing available right now for trucks >_>
