Home Workstation - uber upgrade featuring i9 9900kf CPU

A1200

I decided to have a break from maxing out my home and work machines in 3rd gen Intel spec, and join the big boys’ club. Originally, I went for an i7 9700f CPU but on productivity benchmarks such as Cinebench, I was amazed to see how not having Hyperthreading makes the PC operate slower than an i7 8770!

Many have pondered why they left out Hyperthreading on the i7 9th gen, perhaps it was to make a market gap between the i5 and i9, perhaps it was because they had a bad batch and binned them as non HT or perhaps they wanted a break from being slapped around about Spectre-type vulnerabilities? Whatever it was, for this machine I ended up replacing the CPU with an i9 9990kf and I will upgrade my work workstation with the i7 9700f – still a vast improvement over the i7 3770K it currently sports.

The NH-D15 cooler I couldn’t get the 2nd fan on in this case and still be able to close the lid so added it to the front of the case and it tracks speed with the main cpu fan via the CPU_OPT connector

Specs are now:

  • CiT Dark Star Midi Case
  • ASUS Prime Z390-A Motherboard
  • Intel i9 9900kf
  • Noctua NH-D15 CPU Cooler
  • ASUS TUF Gaming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 32gb (2x16gb) DDR4 3000 MHz
  • 3x Noctua NF-S12A PWM case fans
  • Corsair RM650x PSU
  • Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB boot drive
  • Samsung 860 EVO 1TB data drive
  • Microsoft Kbd / Mouse
  • LG 27MK600M-B 27” 75Hz IPS Monitor
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit

Pics and benchmarks below. Just Tweak GPU II simple overclocking and XMP profile set on RAM – no additional OC’ing.

I turned on the Asus AI Overclocker and managed to eek out a little more performance without any fine tuning:

I thought I was done with this rig but eBay have a 20% off selected sellers, one happened to be a PC company so I managed to get an RTX2070 for £350. Will post some benchmarks when it lands.

Hell yeah it is a beast. May change my motherboard as I have a strange phenomenon with this one but apart from that really enjoying having the horsepower.

Best userbenchmark I can get where all components are performing well at the same time: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/33903637 (found the NVMe drive ran better with no heatsink attached).

This follows a motherboard and PSU change (Aorus Z390 Pro and an RM750x respectively). Why? Read here: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1252490-weird-hardware-disconnect-sound-and-screen-goes-black-for-a-second/
