Last optimisation bujg is fixed however what i linked is entirily another issue its defragging ssd's instead of trimming them its a bug that actually been around quite a long time even in 1909

I have all my systems with SSD's and actually haven't encountered that. If I run it manually it says "Trimming" and completes in few seconds. Not sure what's doing when it's triggered by scheduler. Hopefully the same thing and not full defrag...

Go to task planner Microsoft > windows > defrag right click run run while optimisation tool is open you see you have same bug to the bug is triggered only by the scheduler not when doing it manually, right clicking the task inside task planner will trigger the scheduler bassicly and show its indeed bugged.

So it's trashing everyone's SSD's and Microsoft doesn't feel like they need to fix this asap?

Wow. NT4 is still biting people.  I thought they got rid of horrors like that with vista.

While a lot of it was recoded, a lot wasn't. An OS a very complex piece of software.

The problem is in those days in software development, a lot of concept widely used in the industry, weren't. What I mean is, all the stuff like good documentation, planning with the the team the architecture before coding a project, where stuff that were not enforced, or even had a second thought. Lessons were learned. While most would just scrap the software and restart from scratch, a complex OS isn't something that easy to do... especially that no only you need to try to not break drivers and software compatibility, but also age old ones.

Just write new functionality that does the same and even better, it can be phased out when its obsolete

The problem is that there are potentially tens or hundreds of other things inside Windows that expect things to work a certain way, and if you just rewrite something and it doesn't match how the old thing works then you get a ton of bugs and errors. And if you rewrite something to function exactly as the old stuff, then what's the point in rewriting it to begin with?

Also, 'Tablet Mode" Action Center button is now gone on non-convertible and non-tablet devices.

So they are eliminating a feature? Why? I like using tablet mode on my HTPC. It's nice to have the start menu pop up automatically with big buttons...

I wonder if MS will ever work on a OS purely from scratch and nothing from the past like it is now in Windows. It's a completely other subject but it's still interesting to know. Regardless I'm hoping this new update won't cause any drops in performance, because that's been happening now for quite some time.

Do I get security patches?  If so, yes.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Hard to say. They would want to keep compatibility with older software. Because thats the only thing they have the makes Windows worth it.... The massive software library it has. Secondly it would take them years, which is kinda what they did before. It was like 5 years between releases and when they screw up they get what happen with Windows XP. Where they had to offer much longer support on an older OS because NO ONE wanted the new product.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

And that's why you write it as new functionality so the old functionality keeps existing for compatibility reasons its why you have all those options on executable etc while apps get updated more towards new compatibility cos its better.

I don't really understand what you mean. We're talking about basic and fundamental features of the OS, like "how to obtain an IP".

You can't have two functions doing the same things in those cases.

  • 4 weeks later...

The update is now released!

As always, the update is delivered in waves, and automatically paused to group of people if problem is detected.

For less chances of problems, it is best to wait for your wave to come. It can take a few weeks to a few months, all depending on how it goes.

In the meantime, I strongly suggest to:

  • Make sure all your drivers are full updated. From printer, to chipset, to audio and graphics card.
  • Make sure all your security software (anti-virus, VPN, etc.) are fully updated.
  • Make sure that device manager isn't showing any hardware issues.
  • Make sure that all your software is updated, including games with anti-cheat systems.

If you can't wait and want to upgrade now:

Simply download and run the Update Assistant found here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

(Click on "Update now")

Media Creation Tool has also been updated, which you can get it from the same link as above, just click on "Download tool now" button instead.

Installed on my main system and it's working fine. Apart from NVIDIA's usual drivers retardation where every such update resets my drivers to some ancient version from early 2019... I'm surprised it's not resetting it after clean install which used to be happening after every big Windows update...

EDIT:

Has Disk Optimizer been addressed yet so it's not full defragmenting SSD's instead of just optimizing them? Allegedly it was defragmenting them when scheduled task was on and optimizing properly when done manually by the user. I wonder if this was fixed...

Huh, apparently it was such a small update, that it updated within 5 minutes...

I wasn't planning on doing it, but finished my work for today and figured if anything went wrong, I had 24 hours to fix it...

All went as planned.

It installed the new Edge browser, with shortcut on my desktop on taskbar. Removed those promptly. I have no use for a browser that kills itself when you close the last tab. Because maybe, just maybe, I want to go back to the homepage after closing everything and not close the God damn fucking Browser!! Can't believe this is a "feature" to so many browsers theses days... Who seriously asked for that ? "Oh I see you've closed the last tab, that means you're done with this browsing session right? I know you didn't specifically press the X button at the top right of the window, but that's okay, I got you fam". At least Vivaldi doesn't pull this trash...

I like the new Folder icon in the start menu.

But, I thought the colored backgrounds were gone?

Spoiler

image.png.65c3b338e176e4294423ceb5339ef3c3.png

Why is Vivaldi still darker than the rest???

Also, my search is not "dark mode" enabled either... Is it just for "web" searches? (I have those disabled, so it only search locally)
