The RTX 3080 Could have had 12GB of VRAM

The picture below is from Techpowerup's review of the Zotac Trinity RTX 3080. The first thing I noticed is the two empty spots above the GPU where memory chips could have been. 

 

If one were to speculate, the two extra chip spaces could be for the 3080ti that is bound to come along eventually. This would also give a 12GB variant the full 384bit memory bus width over the 320 bit bus of the 3080. 

 

I don't think any of this is surprising or new information, but actually seeing those two empty spaces bugs me.

Im pretty sure they wanted to limited the memory bus to 320bit, so they can sell the 3090 with the full speed memory bus. You can use those channels if you paid more for the 3090. They do this all the time with gpus.

the part of the GPU that those missing chips are attached to aren't enabled... so essentially yes, but you would have had a 3090

The 3080 and 3090 share the same chip, so yes it can support 12/24GB (or maybe 11/22GB if they really want to). For now the rumour is for there to be a 20GB variant of the 3080. If they choose to add something with a little more performance in it, maybe they could unlock more cores and memory channels.

This has been a thing for a long time, not only GPU's even vehicles.

Keep in mind, extra memory = extra cost for them = higher price for us.

 

I wouldn't mind paying for more VRAM on the 3080, if the price is reasonable, but there is no way of knowing if we're going to need more than 10GB

Also before anyone quotes me, memory allocation =/= memory usage
