Looking for new PSU

Hi all,

So I found out on the forums that my current PSU (Seasonic focus gold 2018 model) has problems in some scenarios. Normally I wouldn't necessarily care, but since I am planning to upgrade in the coming months and I've had a GPU caught on fire with my previous PSU that could sometimes lead to problems (M12II killed my GTX 950) I think I'll just play it safe and upgrade the PSU as soon as possible.

I'd very much prefer to not spend too much since this is the second time I "need" to replace my PSU in less than three years. Here's what I found:

- €95 Cooler Masterd MWE Gold 750W

- €103 Corsair TX750M V2

- €114 Corsair RM750 (2019)

What I am unsure about is whether the two corsair units are the TXM 2017 (Gold) and RM Gray units from the psu tier list, and thus fall in category A. If I'd probably pick one of these units, I guess the TXM since it's gold rated in the psu tier list in stead of blue even though it's cheaper.

Which one do you think I should get? I am (very original I know) planning to upgrade to probably the RTX 3070 to replace my 2060 non-super.

Cheers,

Martijn

Out of that list the RM750 is the best performer.

So the RM750 is indeed an RM750 grey? I'm not sure what the grey is supposed to represent but I can't find any reference to it or any other PSU.

What's an RM750 grey lol.  I guess the sticker on the unit?

Exactly my point, I don't know. It's in the PSU tier list though... The unit itself is grey, the sticker is black. So much confusion...

I guess black is Gray to make it easier to differentiate from the all black casing I guess.  Older units have yellow wording.

Seasonic Focus FX has problems with high-transient power draw GPUs, like AMD Vega and possibly also high-end nVidia Ampere, i didn't see anyone testing them with RTX3080. This results in PSU just shutting down under load, that's all, no explosions here. Upgrade the PSU, if it doesn't work then you can think about replacing it.

That's what it did last time, but when I powered it back on shit caught on fire.

I use my PC quite heavily and I have a job nowadays, so maybe I should just not be greedy and just get a RM850x. That way I should be fairly sure that I won't need to get a new PSU for 10 years, which would be nice since I'm already on my 3rd in 10 years at the moment (the new one would be the 4th).

Nothing wrong with that idea, one of the best Gold rated PSUs you can buy.

@Samfisher @Ankerson

Would you say the RMx 850 is worth $30 over the TX750M V2?

It's a better unit all the way around.

I wouldn't be surprised if Seasonic M12II did that, its' a cheap 10+ years old design. Seasonic Focus isn't. But it's yours money, if you want to replace it - fine, look out for Bitfenix Whisper M and be quiet! Straight Power 11 Gold units tho, they often go cheap in EU.
