Asus Laptop - Sound and Microphone have both stopped worki

Recently bought this laptop for my daughter for school work.  After an update (WINDOWS!) both the sound and microphone have stopped working. When headphones are attached it recognises that they are attached but there is still no sound.  Have gone through and checked drivers and they appear to be up to date.  The troubleshooter states that it can't fix the problem.  Have tried Asus support (not currently open for live chat or phone) - I've gone through their suggestions but still nothing.

 

Can anyone help please?

reinstall the audio driver
