IF you plan to buy a 3080 for 1080p...

Just don't okay :) it's a 4K card...from the reviews i've seen even at 1440p sometimes you won't be able to max it out...in many games.

4K:

You NEED a high end high resolution high refresh rate display to make good use of such a GPU or else you're wasting money...and ALSO VR justify for racing sims etc.

I'm not surprised. Even with a 2080 non Ti, you're 100% CPU limited at 1080p in nearly every game out there, let a lone a card that's basically 100% faster in the best case scenario.

@BTGbullseye would disagree

he does present a fair point, but I still agree that it's overkill

you don,t need to super render 4K and get 4 pixels of information to then downsample to a 1080p monitor...a super clean 1080p image is just that...a 1080p image...even a shitty 1440p monitor at native render resolution will shit all over it :)

Done, his fair point makes no sense what so ever...even with a VR headset i can tell you from experience that even 1.5x supersampling is getting in the useless range and the screens are right next to your eyes.

but i need it to get 200+ fps in bdo so my abilities animation is shorter

im actually half serious there an engine problem in bdo where the animations are significantly faster with higher fps and that give you a big advantage in pvp since you can squeeze in a longer combo

This is the reason I will point to Jay's video for the consumer looking to upgrade, he touches on some of the most important points of gaming. That experience is everything, and if you really want to play a game you need to look at your panel this time and see whether you really want to keep going with what you've got.

Well, it still doesn't max out 1080p 144Hz display in Control with RTRT effects enabled, but this rather says smth on how optimized this game is.
control-rtx-1920-1080.png

Another point, with RTRT gaining momentum we can expect more games using it in the future with increased complexity so even if it doesn't really make sense to get this GPU for today's demands, it might make sense for 'future-proofing' if there's such a thing, assuming you have 700$ lying around.

Depending on the funds avaliable after i decide on if i upgrade my tv to something nicer (it was the cheapest 55inch i could find that looked half decent so an upgrade would be good) it will probably be one of these two

i actually thought about doing that

sell my 2080 aorus for a 3080 aorus xtreme or 3080 gaming oc

i play on 1080p but i also play on my 4k tv from time to time, games like forza 3, nfs payback but its actually not worth it :/

then i'd say grab that money you save by not upgrading your ''still not that old and perfectly fine GPU'' and invest it in a nice high refresh rate 1440p display for your computer instead...you'll thank me later.

The benchmarks are so disappointing. NVIDIA said 1.5x the 2080 Ti but in most benchmarks it just has a bit more FPS than the 2080 Ti. I wanted to get it for 1440p as I want all my games to run at 144Hz but it can't even do that.

i think you should go watch more reviews...all the reviewers are extremely positive about this GPU and all of them agree it,s a gigantic jump in performance, the biggest one we've seen in years (bigger than 980 to 1080 according to digital foundry) and the 3080 ''run the same at 1440p as the 2080ti at 1080p'' - Jayz2cents.

I saw his video and the card didn't reach 144 FPS on 1440p in most benchmarks and it was getting more FPS than the 2080 Ti.

I'm going to wait for the RTX 3070 and see how that performs on 1440p but are you really saying that the 3070 and 3080 would essentially be the same on 1440p with ray tracing?

I don't mind spending less but I don't want to make a bad choice and regret it next year when the new games come out.

you are aware of the fact that many games even with 15 times more GPU performance will STILL not run at 144hz right?!

Because there is the CPU, and the rest of the system and game optimization and what not.

I've let go from the 144hz goal LONG ago...when i realized MANY games will NOT run at 144FPS even with reduced settings and resolution...that's why they invented VARIABLE REFRESH RATE MONITORS (AKA Gsync and Freesync) so that way even with 90 to 110FPS games do feel STUPID smooth.

TLDR: Get over your 144hz thing...it's irrelevant.

there's still a use case of 3080 for 1080p/144hz, RT on with dlss off, it's very niche but after seeing dlss on vs off side by side, i can respect it.

These 1080p scores are just plain low but when I looked up what CPU was used they made sense.

I do 144fps average in SOTTR at the highest settings with TAA but my 4k score is closer at 78fps average.

I use an i7 8086k with an 5ghz all core overclock and a slightly overclocked 2080 ti.

What this tells me is don't buy a R9 3950x for 1080p gaming, but for 4k it will do just fine.

The card is definitly overkill for 1080p, it does bottleneck in some 2K titles as well, though I feel like upcoming titles will be much more demanding and 2K might be fine.

That said I'm not all that hyped for 4K yet, I'm worried about how long the card will work well at 4K before newer titles will just role over the 3080.

I'm definitly getting it, but it's going to be for 2K or 2,5K at 144hz or higher

OHH it will be no worries there i'm considering one myself since i do both high end VR sims and 1440p high refresh gaming...the 3080 is far from overkill for 1440p it'll just age well IMO.
