I was a joke to some of my relatives since I spent so much money on computers but slowly I began to make money with them since I did not just play games.

I did programming that led to game design that led to 3D design.

 

My 2080 tis and soon 3090s are still paid for by the money I made with my computers so turn your addiction into cash like I did.

Another perk is that I had no employers, just customers and that was so nice.

I wouldn't call that an addiction. You'd have to be constantly changing things for it to be an addiction.

Changing that CPU right now counts as constantly. He needs a change fix now and can't wait for new ryzen.

 

The only bigger sign of addiction would be downgrading to free cash for an even quicker fix of a different part.

Since when was having a hobby considered an addiction? Even if you upgraded parts every time a new generation came out, I still wouldn’t call than an addiction.

Just one? Nah. Having a half dozen computers littered around your desk area hooked to various monitors, and having network equipment and peripherals stuffed under desks; That might be an addiction.

I would rather not call than an addiction. I have seen people literally frozen with their oldest-old systems and yet not caring an upgrade. You are still better than them.

For me it's less of an addiction, but more of a 'want' to get new tech because "oooh! more performance!"

it's just all about being able to stay within your budget.

The question becomes does your current system do what is needed?   If you’re buying because it is new that’s one thing.  If you’re buying because your system doesn’t work that something else.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Exactly. 

 

You'll find people who sit in front of the TV all day, open mouthed, in a semi-vegetative state, saying computers and video games aren't a healthy past time.

 

People who drink alcohol and cause misery will say it's "anti social".

 

The people who spend a small fortune on the newest I-phone every 6 months, so they can keep up in some meaningless race with their friends, will say it's a "waste of money" to upgrade your system. 

 

In short, there are a hundred hobbies or forms of entertainment that I don't enjoy, or think are a waste of time, but I also understand we all have different tastes.

 

I enjoy the escapism of gaming.

 

For me it is entertainment, like a film, or tv show. 

 

The software has always been more interesting to me than the hardware it runs on, but I acknowledge it is useful to try and know a little about both.

 

Which didn't require much from me as a console gamer - but having bought a pc recently i felt like it was sensible (and rather fascinating) to try and learn some of the basics...hence my arrival on the forum.
