Church Stream PC Build

Ansem117

Im building a dedicated streaming PC for my church, plan on using OBS and live stream to facebook. Wanting to stream at 1080P but can do 720P as long as its clear. This is the build i have pieced and was wondering if anybody with similar stream experience could tell me if this is overkill, good to go or needs more (such as a capture card). I have never streamed before so am unfamiliar with that world.

what device will be used to record? how does it interface with the PC?

overall it's a very overkill PC for the job

You'll need a capture card to go from your camera to the PC. If you have more than one camera, that changes things too. You'll also need to figure out how you're going to get audio as well. Are you gonna go from the mixer into the PC, or use whatever the camera has? Personally, I'd go from the mixer to the PC as it would sound more clear.

If you're gonna take your audio from the mixer, you'll first need to figure out what kind of outputs your mixer has. Some you can just use an RCA to 3.5mm cable and go right into the sound card on the motherboard. If not, you may have to go XLR out, which may require an audio interface (I don't like those XLR to 3.5mm cables, they never sound right to me).

Agreed - why does he need a GTX 1660 in there? You can stream using an Intel iGPU if you need to.

Aside from that, if you're putting in a powerful GPU, then you don't need a powerful CPU - and vice versa. If you use a software encoder, it'll use the CPU. If you use a hardware encoder, it'll use the GPU (whether discrete via NVENC, etc, or integrated via QuickSync).

QuickSync should be 100% sufficient for a church's needs.

If they have the budget, and specifically want some higher end components, like an NVME SSD (overkill unless amazing value), that's one thing. But these components are simply not required.

I would include an i5 (has it's own iGPU) or Ryzen 5 and the cheapest lowest end GPU - or I would replace the Ryzen 5 with the absolute cheapest AMD CPU plus a low-ish end or older mid-range GPU (1660 is still overkill even here).

super overkill, i'd look at a i5-10500, 16GB RAM, 240GB SSD and 2TB+ HDD (added storage for regular backup image to restore quickly if it goes down)

integrated GPU is perfect for a simple stream, some cameras have built in "webcam" software so it might save you from needing a capture card.

i would say having a 1650 super is nice for NVENC Turing (for a little bit better visual quality, quicksync  is dead in my eyes, so is AMD's encoder.)

alternatively, software x264 is fine on medium/slow, which is slightly lower quality than NVENC Turing

it is also very heavy on CPU, which he may need to process captured audio/video footage.

so if he wants a GPU, 1650 Super is good enough, any other 16/20 series gpu uses the same NVENC (other than 1650, which uses NVENC Volta, which is slightly inferior to x264 medium in most cases)

Thanks you all for the replies, that is exactly what i was afraid of doing because my PC knowledge (while very limited) is gaming and when doing lots of research most of what I found was how to stream/game or stream to twitch and such from console and so forth. We do have a camera (nice panasonic but i don't remember exact model) and we were streaming before but had two problems. One was the internet connection which has been fixed, the other was a Lenovo all-in-one that just couldn't keep up with encoding and uploading which is what i'm replacing. Stream would be very choppy and buffer and audio would be off time often. A lot of this was setup prior to me getting involved. We are getting audio directly from the mixer. With no real knowledge of streaming very open to suggestions on how best to go about this whether CPU x264 encoding or NVENC on a 1650 Super. I just remembered that we already have a Magewill (I believe) HDMI capture card for the Camera to computer. Once again i really appreciate the answers and certainly sounds like i can back it off and save some money.

As others have said, this is super overkill.  You should be well-served with a moderately powerful workstation build.  No GPU needed, just a decent CPU.

Unless you have poor ventilation or the room is warm where your PC will be, I also don't think you need to shell out for additional fans.  Just use what comes stock with the case and CPU.

Add your own choice of peripherals and this should be a decent build for what you're looking to do.

Keep in mind that Ryzen 5 2600 does not have an iGPU. You'll need to add a cheap GPU (literally the cheapest one on sale, like a GT710 or an HD5450).

Alternatively you could grab a Ryzen APU instead, like the Ryzen 5 4600G or 4600GE - those have integrated graphics. (The G is 65W while the GE is 35W TDP).

Yeah it's annoying, but it was a strategic decision that AMD made to:

1. Lower the manufacturing cost per CPU

2. Help differentiate the regular CPU's from the APU's

Not too big of a problem, I think - just grab a $40 GPU, or switch the Ryzen 5 CPU out for a Ryzen 5 APU instead (note you'll want to check board compatibility).
