Ampere gpu question I've heard nobody ask?

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

So I've seen recommendations on the psu required for these new nvidia gpus, now I have a antec 1200w psu and it is a old psu and trust it 100%. I currently have a gigabyte gtx 780 windforce, so also old. It has a custom bios a pulls 425w by it self due to the overclock, so heres my question.....

What 12v rail amps are required for a 3090?

Trust is not a factor, power supplies often die spontaneously and with no warning signs. If you're rocking a 7 or 8 year old psu, even if it's a really good one, time to consider an upgrade, especially for a GPU the likes of a 3090

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k (won) - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Kill Trident Z RGB - Force MP500 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G2 650W - Black and green theme, Razer branwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Linux Proliant ML150 G6:

Dual Xeon X5560 - 24GB ECC DDR3 - GTX 750 TI - old Seagate 1.5TB HDD - Dark moded Ubuntu (and Win7, cuz why not)

How many watts do I need? Seasonic Focus threadUserbenchmark (Et al.) is trash explained, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I was looking at a new one. Wanted some sort of corsair one. Fully modular and with usb link

All components have operating shelf lives. If your PSU is old, get a new one. Don't put your entire system in jeopardy for saving a few hundred bucks.

A proper 650 watt PSU with your typical gaming cpu would do the trick, the 3090 is rated for 350 watts.

Yeah I had pretty much made my mind up to get a new one, but I'd be more comfortable knowing what amps is need on the 12v rail for these new gpus. I've been stung before with this current gpu. Brought the recommend wattage actually was over on the wattage, still didn't display on hdmi, had to look up the amps and get appropriate psu

We know the new connector is rated to 300W and is 12V. Apply Ohm's law and you get 25A.

Isn't the new connector 2 8 pins joined? So thats twice the 12v rails?

By the adapter cable, yes it is from two 8-pin connectors. If we assume they are evenly split, and your PSU has multiple rails, then it could be half that (12.5A) per 8-pin connector.

Basically two 8-pin connectors are rated for half the new 12-pin connector so it is exactly matched. Any existing 8-pin connector from a PSU should be ok.

The current psu can support, 30a across 8 rails. So that said ive seen a rm850 I belive with IIRC was 50 odd amps on 12v. So that should be plenty. I have a o11-d case and plan to have custom loop so pumps and fans. Has 11 fans currently
