Is the Crucial MX500 a good SSD?

GamerBlake

Recently I noticed that my storage space was filling up fast and my 1TB 860 EVO, 1 TB 860 QVO and 2TB Firecuda SSHD are all between 85%-90% full and while my 1TB 970 EVO Plus NVMe drive still has about 50% free space I really don’t want to slow my PC down by filling up my boot drive to much.

Question: I’m thinking of buying a 2TB Crucial MX500 to replace my 1TB WD Blue HDD so I have some breathing room in regards to storage but I don’t know if it’s a reliable, high performance SSD.

If anyone has experience with the Crucial MX500 SSD can you please let me know. How does it compare to other SATA SSDs like the 860 EVO?

Thanks!

Yes, it's among the better SATA SSDs out there. I'd put it in the same ballpark as the 860 EVO.

Oh ok thanks!

Wow the 860 EVO is like 30% more expensive so I’m surprised to hear it’s in the same class.

Do you happen to know if Crucial has good customer service/support like EVGA for example?

Eh, it's mostly the usual Samsung tax. For instance more often than not I see Samsung's 860 QVO around the same price as the MX500, and that's an inferior product, mainly due to it using QLC NAND.

I don't have much in the way of experience with their customer support, since I never got or had to get in touch with them yet, so I don't know.

You'll probably find it difficult to get stories about crucial's customer support. They make ram and SSDs. Things that don't tend to be broken very often. They're big enough that I'm sure it's fine.

The MX series is a good value TLC drive with a dram cache, and will serve you well if you get it.

Main Rig: R9 5950X @ PBO, RTX 3090, 64 GB DDR4 3666, InWin 101, Full Hardline Watercooling

Server: R7 1700X @ 4.0 GHz, GTX 1080 Ti, 32GB DDR4 3000, Cooler Master NR200P, Full Soft Watercooling

LAN Rig: R5 3600X @ PBO, RTX 2070, 32 GB DDR4 3200, Dan Case A4-SFV V4, 120mm AIO for the CPU

HTPC: i7-7700K @ 4.6 GHz, GTX 1050 Ti, 16 GB DDR4 3200, AliExpress K39, IS-47K Cooler

Router: R3 2200G @ stock, 4GB DDR4 2400, what are cases, stock cooler

I don't have a problem...

Ahh ok I just got a dead SSD once when I bought a SanDisk 32GB SSD wayyy back in 2013 and so whenever I buy them I always have to ask myself “If it arrives DOA how hard and how expensive is it to get a replacement? Do I have to pay for return shipping? That kind of stuff.

Well in all fairness the 860 QVO isn’t a bad drive. I have some of my newer but less demanding games on mine and the load times are pretty snappy and almost identical to my 860 EVO load times.

Like I have Resident Evil 2 & 3 remakes on it and they both load equally as fast as my 860 EVO loads them.

However all I do is play games. I can’t speak to whether large file transfers like 4K video would perform as well since I know sometimes drives will go really fast until a certain point and then drop from 500 MB/s to like 80 MB/s.

DOA just deal with the retailer, way easier. Especially if you use newegg/amazon (or local equivalents of giant retailers who pay return shipping and generally just make things easy). But yeah, been there. Going through a gigabyte RMA rn, certainly took more effort than it should've
