Triple clicking sentences to highlight occasionally causes missing/misplaced "Quote selection" button

Steps to reproduce/what were you doing before it happened?

shown in video.

 

What happened?

Triple left clicked a sentence to highlight it. Quote selection button is not where it should be.

 

What did you expect to happen?

Quote Selection button to appear below sentence, but it's sometimes misplaced somewhere or out right missing.

Hard to locate sentences with such issue, but reproducable when you find one.

I have a video, but it's a DM so i'll only DM video link to Mods that request it.

Other relevant details:

This isn't the only time it happened, it happened a few times even while replying in normal thread.

 

Hypothesis: in the example video, it happened when the next line is a embedded video that's uploaded to LTT forum

triple clicking also highlights the "next line" command at the end of the sentence, so perhaps that bugged it out.

 

Temporary solution: click and drag to highlight like cavemen.

 

edit: highlighting first sentence of a post from back to front makes the Quote selection button disappear unless you stop exacly before the first word, while cursor is still in the "I" form.

The "quote selection" takes about 3/4 of a second to pop up for me (Ryzen 5 2600+1660ti+16GB+NVMe), if I triple click faster than it takes to come up I don't have the issue of clicking it

i tested it, fast and slow makes no difference

I've done some digging into this. The triple click issue seems to be because the element following the paragraph that you selected is a video, and for some reason triple clicking on the paragraph is making chrome report the end location of the selection as being inside the video. This is breaking the trick that the forum is using to position the tooltip (because it tries to create an element at the end of the selection, which is inside the video and therefore invisible in a strict sense that causes it to have no location). For the same reason, it also positions the tooltip on the next paragraph rather than the selected one when there's just text.

 

I've submitted a ticket to IPS for this, but I can't see any nice solutions so there's a reasonable chance that it won't be fixed. I have also encouraged them to fix the issue with needing to end the selection exactly within the post, but I don't know if they will fix that either because it's technically not a bug.
