3070 or 3080?

Go to solution Solved by Stahlmann,

I had a 3440x1440 ultrawide for a few years. I can say from my own experience you need A LOT of GPU power to reach 144Hz on many games. The 3080 will certainly be a much better buy, as the 3070 is roughly equal to a 2080Ti and the 2080Ti will struggle to hit your goals in AAA titles. I'm thinking of a 3080 aswell for my 1440p 144Hz 27GN850 aswell.

Current specs: 8700k, gtx1070, 750W psu. I just got an ultrawide 3440x1440p monitor and as you could expect my 1070 struggles. I usually get 50 fps at low settings in triple a games. But I expected it to be about that. My goal is go hit 144 frames at max/high settings with ray tracing on in modern games and future games for a while. I understand that we don't have real world benchmarks for the cards yet. But in your opinion would a 3070 be enough? Or for my needs does a 3080 make more sense. thanks!

If you are able and willing, the 3080 will be better suited for sure.  My intent is to go the 3080 route for my 16:9 165hz 1440p monitor, which I am more than confident will be ample in just about every / all games I play / plan to play.

If you can spare the extra cash, the 3080 will be the better buy. A 2080Ti isn't always able to get the framerates you're looking for either, so getting something a bit quicker should be a smart move.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
