Btw if you buy this for games, then it's not a balanced one either. Too much CPU, not enough GPU.

depending on how you match it, using exact same specs is hard cause the 9700f is expensive. a build thats objectively better in a lot of ways just with a slightly lesser cpu would be cheaper but for someone who is dead set on a 9700 its hard to get cheaper

how i would budget that kind of money, if i were buying new rn:

but now is a great time to buy a used gpu, you can get a 2060 super for <300 with everyone panic selling lol. prices should go back up after a week or two but rn the used market is in shambles

topics i need help on:

Spoiler

my "oops i bought intel right before zen 3 releases" build

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (placeholder)

GPU: Gigabyte 980ti Xtreme (also placeholder), deshroud w/ generic 1200rpm 120mm fans x2, stock bios 130% power, no voltage offset: +70 core +400 mem

Memory: 2x16gb GSkill Trident Z RGB 3600C16, 14-15-30-288@1.45v

Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming

Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S w/ white chromax bling
OS Drive: Samsung PM981 1tb (OEM 970 Evo)

Storage Drive: XPG SX8200 Pro 2tb

Backup Storage: Seagate Barracuda Compute 4TB

PSU: Seasonic Prime Ultra Titanium 750W w/ black/white Cablemod extensions
Case: Fractal Design Meshify C Dark (to be replaced with a good case shortly)

basically everything was bought used off of reddit or here, only new component was the case. absolutely nutty deals for some of these parts, ill have to tally it all up once it's "done" :D

i need to check craigslist. after the 3070 has been out for a bit, i bet that 2080TIs will go for 400-500 us. There is no point to sell for more than the 3070, and its used. 500 max for used 2080ti, end of january. now would be a great time for a scrapyard wars.

I could use some help with this!

look at reddit.com/r/hardwareswap, craigslist and ebay are crap for prices although actual sold listings on ebay appear to have dropped too

Also, I know it would be more cost effecient to just build a pc, that's not an option sometimes.

Surprisingly, it's pretty much the price you're gonna pay when building it. I matched every single part near perfectly. The RAM shows as DDR4 2666 in the bestbuy link, same with the B365 motherboard. The cases are different but I mean, it's very close and a case is a case. The keyboard and mouse you receive might be $10 to $20 cheaper as well. And you can bank on them most likely sending you this exact power supply or something even cheaper that they had laying around since 2019 before inflation started.

PCPartPicker Part List
Type Item Price
CPU Intel Core i7-9700F 3 GHz 8-Core Processor $279.00 @ Amazon
Motherboard MSI B365M PRO-VDH Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard $69.99 @ Newegg
Memory G.Skill Aegis 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2666 CL19 Memory $52.99 @ Newegg
Storage TCSunBow X3 480 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $44.99 @ Amazon
Storage Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $37.19 @ Amazon
Video Card Asus GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6 GB TUF GAMING OC Video Card $229.99 @ Best Buy
Case Deepcool MATREXX 50 ATX Mid Tower Case $49.99 @ Amazon
Power Supply Thermaltake Smart 600 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply $54.99 @ Amazon
Case Fan Apevia 412L-RGB Spectra 57.67 CFM 120 mm Fans 4-Pack $34.99 @ Newegg
Keyboard Redragon S101 Wired Gaming Keyboard With Optical Mouse $39.97 @ Amazon
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
  Total $894.09
  Generated by PCPartPicker 2020-09-02 14:50 EDT-0400

Now you can definitely build an equivalent PC, say an AMD build, for a little cheaper. But it won't be as cheaper as you might expect outside of inflation. Because I'd personally target a much better PSU, which would tack on some price, same with the motherboard for a Ryzen 7 CPU.
