You must be young. No, there is still competition in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. Also VW does not own Mercedes Benz, BMW and Rolls Royce.

But No government is doing anything about it ! They own most of the ******** companies I know of ! Bugatti(I was surprised to know of this one in particular), Porsche, Lamborghini, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Bentley, Rolls Royce

Basically 6 companies own all the news networks, cable TV stations, movie studios, and mass outlets for media. 5 own all the car companies in the world. Then about 7 companies own all the food and beverages in the world. There is never a case where it's only 1 but I do agree the definition of a monopoly needs to be updated

VAG (Volkswagen Auto Group) is one of the largest car manufacturers in the world (2nd behind Toyota), but they don't own half of the things you've mentioned.

 

In Particular, Mercedes Benz is owned by Diamler Auto Group (Diamler-AG) (they used to also own Chrysler but sold them in 2007 as part of the US Bailout process).

 

BMW is entirely publicly owned so they are their "own" company, Rolls-Royce is actually owned by BMW right now.

 

If you look through the history of some of these brands, you'll see that over the decades, some of them get passed back and fourth many times between different owners.

 

VAG is not even close to a monopoly. They're a dick sometimes (certified Jetta owner), but they're really no better or worse than any of the other auto giants. They make some really good cars, and they make some stupid decisions (DieselGate). All in all, I don't regret owning a VW, but I'm also not 100% loyal to them and am willing to consider other brands for my next purchase.

From what I remember, there was a lot of internal friction at DaimlerChrysler over, well, Daimler-Benz management and Chrysler management not agreeing with how to do things. If memory serves, they ultimately split as they just couldn't agree on much and that left Chrysler in a financial hole after their bankruptcy, least until Fiat swooped them up.
