Help choosing speakers 2.1 vs 5.1

Hey there. Im thinking getting new pc speakers and i dont really know what to do. First of all, the budget is kinda limited, 100-120 euros, since i recently build my desktop. I was thinking getting 5.1 even though i cant really do speakers behind me, was thinking 2 in front of me, 2 left and right and 1 above, but im not sure since i dont know if my budget is enough for decent speakers.

What do you guys think? Do you use 5.1 or 2.1 on your system? Obviously im gaming and watching movies on my pc, thats why i had an incline for 5.1

Also im planning getting headphones too. Would a 2.1 + headphones like razers which have 5.1/7.1 sound would actually be the best choice?

At lower budgets, less channels is better. You get better enclosures, drivers, amplifiers and crossovers with less channels, compared to more channels at the same price. 100% look for a 2.1/2.0 system.

 

I would at something from Edifier. The R1800TIII would do you well. Other model's from them are also great for the price. Good enclosures, decent amps, decent drivers and good crossovers. Much better than any cheap speaker with a plastic enclosure. In a simple sentence: Don't buy your speakers from a keyboard manufacturer.

 

There also isn't a point in doing surround if you can't get the channels positioned correctly.

 

Personally, I use 2.2 or 7.2 for gaming. For movies I use 9.2.4 running off a Bryston SP4 processor. It's fairly overkill (Roughly £185k in audio gear, excluding cables+room treatment and power delivery) but such is an audiophiles life.

damm sounds like an amazing set up! id love a good home theater someday.

 

well the particular model you mentioned seems its the same price as the 5.1 speakers i mentioned. wouldnt the 5.1 be better vfm for those prices? also i thought logitech was amazing for speakers, was i wrong? im not really an audiophile, so while i do want a nice-ish set up, i wouldnt spend a lot of money. Thats why i went with the best sellers for that price logitechs z333

Don't buy audio products from a keyboard and mouse company. Buy audio gear from audio companies. 

You'll get a better 2.0 setup from Edifier than you will from Logitech at the same price point.

Yup. I have those and they're miles better than the Logitech speakers that I used to have before learning a bit more about audio products.

The older Logitech stuff was actually kinda decent. The Z5500 is still a really popular model, but isn't made anymore. The newer Logitech stuff is pretty cheap enclosures/amplifiers, but their drivers are made by Tangband which are actually a decent driver manufacturer. Just unfortunatley the drivers aren't backed up by the rest of the system. For example, the subwoofer of the Z906 uses a Tangband W8-1365SBF if I remember correctly.

 

That particular model would be ideal for the price.

First to clear up a possible misconception: in a 5.1 system you have front left center and right and left/right surrounds (not rears!), so three speakers in front of you and the satellites on your side not behind you (or at most a small bit). Only in 7.1 and up you get rears.

 

As others have said, surround works best with proper speaker placement, so unless you really really want surround sound, at lower budgets you can get better audio quality if you go for a 2.1 / 2.0 setup.
