9th Gen vs 10th

Hi guys! Completely new to Pc building but not Pc gaming.. had my current rig for 5 years and it’s in need of replacing.

im planning on “future” Proofing myself for a good few years but I keep tripping myself up over the cpu choice.

i was originally going I9 9900k, Z390 Master with a 2080 super
but I’m wondering if I’m better off going I7 10700k with a Z490 pro/ultra since the new gen10 Chips are swapping time a 1200 socket?

if you are mainly gaming, get a 10600k. you dont need a i9 for gaming, and you wont really have any upgrade path if you go with 9th gen either.

It’s for gaming and general bits of work here and there, I was thinking that with the 9th gen that was my main worry since in a few years I’ll need a new mobo too

To add to what @Oswin said, the 10600k can match a 10900k with respects to gaming if you spend a little time on an overclock and get some solid 3600MHz+ memory.

This all said if you want to "future proof" wait a few more months for new GPU's from AMD and Nvidia, and if you can hold out until the end of the year (if humanity does not cease to exist) then AMD is also launching new CPU's.

Most likely yes. But Intel is on their heals, next gen CPU's may not even move down to the 7nm process and if they do there will be a HUGE delay so at this point they would make no more sense than the AM4 platform in terms of an upgrade path. And if OP had their current rig for 5+ years that would go past the standard 2 gen upgrade cycle regardless so not a real concern here.

Because the 10900K is a lot more expensive. And if you need high core count, AMD is way better for the money.

if you are only gaming, you wont benefit more from the 10900k, the video linked by @TheDailyProcrastinator shows that the 10600k can easily keep up with a 10900k on gaming especially with an overclock.

because games do not scale up to 10 cores, and the 10600k performs similarly in gaming especially with an overclock.

assuming you're mainly gaming, a 10600k will be more than enough.

also lga 1151 is more or less dead and you'll have no upgrade path unless you switch to a different platform.

Because core density past 4C/8T still does not matter that much for gaming. Frequency is king and a 10600k can clock just as high, you can even beat a 10900k with an OC. The 10900k is not bad, just not a logical decision for certain application uses.

It really doesn't matter which chip you go for if you are thinking about future upgrades. Neither board will be compatible with a chip from 2025 (going off your previous upgrade cycle) amd is on the last legs of am4 and Intel never gives more than 2 generations per mobo chip.

It’s for gaming and general bits of work here and there, I was thinking that with the 9th gen that was my main worry since in a few years I’ll need a new mobo too

if ur going with intel, for "futureproofing" gaming i recommend a 10700k, and obviously zen 3 if u can wait.

Forget about 9th gen intel or zen 2.

Most of those do not benefit from higher core counts, so more a 'want' than a 'need' but hey, I have no problems with overkill 10 core CPU lol.

if you are only gaming, you wont benefit more from the 10900k, the video linked by @TheDailyProcrastinator shows that the 10600k can easily keep up with a 10900k on gaming especially with an overclock.

I’ll probably do that then, it saves me money in the long run too! Now just need to find a decent Z490 around £250. I was originally going gigabyte but now I’m not sure

9th Gen is not worth it unless you can get a i5-9600K to R3 3300X pricing, a i7-9700K to a 10600K pricing or i9-9900K to a 10700K pricing if they cost more just forget it, actually why not grab a R7 3700X? :3
