Is a Ryzen 5 3600 enough for 1440p gaming? Is there A big perfomance difference when going with a 10600k?

Is there a big perfomance benefit for going for like a 10600k instead of a 3600 when gaming at 1440p?

A 10600k (especially if you plan to OC) is a clear winner if all you do is game, but a 3600 is no slouch. That said as you move to higher resolutions the demand is more GPU bound. What GPU are you pairing this with?

I'm currently running a Ryzen 5 3600 at 1440p and have no problems at all keeping a stable 80-100fps in most games. Obviously it depends on what graphics card you are working with. I could probably higher fps if I had a better graphics card (currently using a GTX 1060).

wont last as long due to it being a 4c/8t, if money allows, a 3600 will last longer.

well the 10600k is better in gaming, the 3600 is as well in all honesty, at 1440 there is more load to the gpu and the difference wont be huge.

if you already have an am4 board go for the 3600, but the 10600k is pretty good as well.

Purely based on performance in the moment, get a 10600K

However, you'll have no upgrade path. LGA 1151 is on the way out because of PCI express 4.0
if you get a gen 2 Ryzen  (that a 3XXX) with an X-570 or B-550 mobo, the new mobo will support at the very least next Gen Ryzen and already support PCIe 4.0.

if Nvidia or AMD makes a PCIe gen 4 card, you'll be stuck at PCIe 3.0.

Depends on what you want. 3600 + a better more expensive gpu will give you much more fps with highest settings 1440p while 10600K will give more max fps with cheaper card on low settings.

No, at high resolution the gpu probably the key of faster framerate.

Having pci-e 3.0 isn't much of an issue, unless you need pcie-4.0 SSD's, or want to add a lot of storage.

It depends on what you want though, the 3600 and a B550 board is cheaper so you can spend more on a GPU.

I would take one of the following

(A) Ryzen 5 3600/3600X with B550/B450 board

(B) Intel Core i5-10600 with a B460/H470 with a OK VRM

(C) Intel Core i5-10400/400F with cheapest Z490 board (use fast RAM with this one)

At 1440p you really won’t notice a difference between the intel and ryzen cpu.
I went from ryzen 1700x to 3700x at 1440p and the difference wasn’t worth the $280 cost of the cpu. I sold the 3700x for $250 and went back to the 1700x and don’t regret that choice.

1440p is such a different animal then 1080p. The performance difference between cpus isn’t as big as most people think.

I would go with the 3600 and b550 board and spend the saved money on a better video card or a big ssd

Well if gaming is the primary purpose then go for the 10600k if the budget allows you too. That will be the better gaming CPU, and if you spend some time with an OC you can match the 10900k.

If you want a better upgrade path and a bit of money saved, the 3600 is the way to go.

If you only game and get as many frames as possible, then go for the 10600K.

Ultimately depends what GPU you're gonna be pairing it with.

On current GPUs, there's minimal difference at 1440p between the two chips except for a few games.

Look to the 1080p results to give you an idea of what more powerful GPUs might look like on these same CPUs.

short version, anything 2070S or under, go with the 3600, 2080S or 2080 ti go with the 10600k, waiting for ampere? go with the 10600k. Cannot recommend 3600 for ampere cards.

Long version: the difference btwn zen 2 and comet lake is understated in general. The amoere rumors are hinting at some huge cpu bottlenecks with ampere even at 1440p. If you are gonna spend 1k for the 3080, the extra 200usd for a 10600k+cooler will be worth it considering the cost of the build. My best guess of cpu bottleneck at 1440p with a 3080/3080 ti is 10% for a 10600k and 25% for a 3600, for a 3080 and up i recommend a 10700k or waiting for zen 3.

I'd go with the 3600 cause of the better value. The marginal performance value of the 10600K over the 3600 is minor, and given the price differential especially once you consider a Z-chipset board for the 10600K I see really no reason to go with the 10600K

People said 720p benchmarks on a 1080ti didn't matter when comparing the 8700k to the 1600

Looks like history proved them wrong.

Looks like history proved them wrong.

I pointed out that zen 1 had single core lower than sandy bridge (remember the confusion when people upgraded from 2600k to 1600?), if zen 3 is ddr4000 like i expect it to be then it'll be a sight to behold.

No, but you should have mentioned your current specs in OP. Go with 3600 then, easy choice.

Would be great in future when more games would start to utilize 6 core or 12 threads

huh? i mean isnt the 3600 much better than the 4770k at 1080p, so it'd still be a good upgrade for 1440p
