Summary

Looks like Apple didn't take too kindly to Epic's addition of direct payment in the iPhone app, circumventing Apple's 30% cut.

Epic has now removed the Fortnite app from the App Store, although it looks like users who currently have the app downloaded can still access it, only new downloads are disabled

 

Update: Looks like Epic has now filed a civil antitrust lawsuit against Apple for the removal of Fortnite from the App store

 

Update again, looks like Google has also removed Fortnite from the Google Play Store

As of right now, those who have already downloaded Fortnite on iOS are still able to access the game; only new downloads are disabled as a result of Apple pulling the game from the App Store. You can even still use Epic’s in-app payment system, according to Teh Washington Post’s Gene Park, who used both Apple and Epic payment systems to purchase v-bucks. It is unclear how future updates to Fortnite will function, but it seems likely Epic would have to get the game reinstated in the App Store to update the iOS version.

Epic has had apps on the App Store for a decade, and have benefited from the App Store ecosystem - including its tools, testing, and distribution that Apple provides to all developers. Epic agreed to the App Store terms and guidelines freely and we’re glad they’ve built such a successful business on the App Store. The fact that their business interests now lead them to push for a special arrangement does not change the fact that these guidelines create a level playing field for all developers and make the store safe for all users. We will make every effort to work with Epic to resolve these violations so they can return Fortnite to the App Store

While Fortnite remains available on Android, we can no longer make it available on Play because it violates our policies. However, we welcome the opportunity to continue our discussions with Epic and bring Fortnite back to Google Play.

Apple unlawfully maintains its monopoly power in the iOS App Distribution Market through its unlawful denial to Epic and other app distributors of an essential facility—access to iOS—which prevents them from competing in the iOS App Distribution Market.

To reach iOS users, Apple forces developers to agree to Apple’s unlawful terms contained in its Developer Agreement and to comply with Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines, including the requirement iOS developers distribute their apps through the App Store. These contractual provision unlawfully foreclose the iOS App Distribution Market to competitors and maintain Apple’s monopoly.

Apple has unlawfully maintained its monopoly in these markets through the anti-competitive acts alleged herein, including by forcing, through its contractual terms and unlawful policies, iOS app developers that sell in-app content to exclusively use Apple’s In-App Purchase, and preventing and discouraging app developers from developing or integrating alternative payment processing solutions.

To reach iOS app users, Apple forces developers to agree to Apple’s unlawful terms contained in its Developer Agreement, including that they use Apple’s InApp Purchase for in-app purchases of in-app content to the exclusion of any alternative solution or third-party payment processor. Further, Section 3.1.3 of Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines unlawfully prohibits developers from “directly or indirectly target[ing] iOS users to use a purchasing method other than in-app purchase”.

Apple is able to unlawfully condition access to the App Store on the developer’s use of a second product—In-App Purchase—for in-app sales of in-app content. Through its Developer Agreement and unlawful policies, Apple expressly conditions the use of its App Store on the use of its In-App Purchase to the exclusion of alternative solutions in a per se unlawful tying arrangement.

 

My thoughts

Apple really had no choice in the matter, as letting Epic get away with it would have proved they let the big guys get away with it while penalising the small guys (like Floatplane)/

My guess is this was a planned attack against Apple, with Epic now having something that they can take to court.

Surprised to see Google follow suit, I thought they'd want to be the 'good guy' in this, but clearly not.

Fortnite will just teach people how to jailbreak and sideload the app. They don't care. They'll probably make a tool for it and everything.

The way Apple polices the app store is one reason I will never own an iphone. I will install what I want to on my phone, I will pay who I want. That and iOS file management is absolute cheeks.

Fortnite is aimed at kids. They don't care if they play on an iPad or an android tablet, or whatever.

And parents probably don't care either as long as their kid shuts up so my guess is that there are people going to switch to android because of this.

 

Not that it's going to make a noticeable change tho, but still. I expect a bunch of angry posts about this.

I highly doubt it if you look at the tech skill level needed. As we sadly know, most are totally clueless

IMHO everybody should do it. Without the popular apps, people will think twice about buying Apple products. And now is a good time. The new iPhone will launch soon. As long as Apple keeps getting away with it, nothing will change. When it start hurting the sales, Apple might think twice about their current policy.

It does surprise me Fortnite was able to update its app to this, while Luke was talking about how he couldn't even upload the Floatplane app to the App Store because monetization in the app.

Already is a lawsuit, and TBH I doubt it matters. There's already a lot of legal precedent for the App Store, and I doubt this will have any real impact on the ongoing investigations, especially as there's nothing substantially novel here (if anything, Epic blatantly circumventing multiple rules probably is harmful to their quest.

People here don't seem to understand why Apple takes a cut in the first place.

 

Apple's logic here is that they don't want every app tp have their own payment processing, and potentially routing their customers to unsecure databases where your credit or debit card details might get saved. This is a very valid point, as we've seen countless data breaches. Hence Apple prefers that the app makes use of the API where Apple will take care of all of this.

 

Also the app store does support multiple currencies, so even currency and region issue is also taken care by Apple.

 

So, do they deserve a cut and maybe a slight profit out of this "service". Yes, I think they do

 

But, 30% is indeed way too much. This should probaby be around 5%, max 10%, as it is indeed hard for me to imagine at this point whether Apple actually even have a significant running cost maintaining their current infrastructure and deals in place. Developers dont seem to actually backing down from this fight, so hopefully the government regulations will restrict Apple from taking a huge chunk of the developers' well deserved revenue

It's made so it's really easy to get stuff onto a Mac, but difficult to get the files off on Windows or Linux.

Except Google allow you to use your own payment processing, Apple does not.

 

On an iOS device, if you want users to pay you, Apple has to take 30%.

On Android, you can just use PayPal, or Stripe, or anything else you want and not pay Google the 30%

That's the thing. For iMessage and facetime, I never set it up. It's still asking me for first-time configuration.

iCloud, we HAVE to use an apple account and as a noob, didn't know that it used iCloud by default, it was on without me doing anything (we have to use it because it's used for backups so that might have something to do with it).


Turned it off now (as far as that's possible) and it's still annoying me with "hey upgrade now!" "Store your stuff in the cloud with no worries!" like, just fuck off... No is No.

 

Funny detail: haven't configured face-id either and that's somehow just fine. Entering my pin is mostly broken tho (I hear 6 dings but it usually misses one for some stupid reason)
