Intel to unveil Xe-HPG gaming architecture with hardware ray-tracing

Intel will be joining the consumer GPU market next year with a series of mid range and high end video cards using GDDR6 and supporting hardware accelerated ray tracing.

Intel has been actively developing another GPU architecture since 2018. This is another Xe micro-architecture called Xe-HPG optimized for gaming. The XPG roadmap spans from mid-range to enthusiast segments. It was built upon the three Xe pillars: Xe-LP (Graphics Efficiency), Xe-HP (Scalability) and Xe-HPC (Compute Efficiency).

Intel has not confirmed the specifications of the GPU, but it was said that it features the GDDR6 memory subsystem to improve the performance per dollar ratio. On the other hand, the Xe-HP series will feature HBM memory.

NVIDIA introduced hardware raytracing 2 years ago with GeForce RTX 20 series. AMD is expected to launch its RDNA2-based graphics cards leveraging hardware raytracing later this year. Intel has also confirmed their Xe-HPG series will support hardware-accelerated raytracing.

Based on we have heard, the Xe-HPG will be manufactured by an external foundry. The Xe-HPG GPUs are currently being evaluated at Intel labs. The plan is to ship this architecture in 2021.

I'm curious to see if Intel will actually be competitive in the GPU market, or if they'll be hopelessly far behind. Looks like we won't have to wait too long to find out.

Its hard to imagine how they would pull it off, considering their manufacturing problems surely apply equally to their GPU venture as it does their CPU?

Still, more competition is better, get those GPU prices to come down.

Their 11th gen mobile CPUs are coming out in September 2nd and are expected to be 10nm. I doubt the dedicated GPUs will be out by then. But the integrated version of Xe is expected to be part of those CPUs.

Their 11th gen mobile CPUs are coming out in September 2nd and are expected to be 10nm. I doubt the dedicated GPUs will be out by then. But the integrated version of Xe is expected to be part of those CPUs.

Oh wow, I didn't realize they were releasing 11th gen mobile chips so soon after the 10th gen chips.

That just mean that TSMC won't actually build more capacity for Intel, not that Intel can't pay for the capacity they already have. Also it's not like there aren't alternatives to using the latest TSMC process, particularly for lower end products.

I'm looking forward to this. Finally having more than 2 vendors for GPU's is going to be beneficial for us consumers. And it's going to spice product launches and make GPU reviews super exciting again. Kinda almost brings back the excitement from days when we had NVIDIA, 3dfx, S3, Matrox, ATi and few others. I still have fond memories of S3 from that era. Most people don't care that they are gone and they were never really the "gaming force" like 3dfx or NVIDIA, but boy games ran stupendously fast on their S3 Metal API. Which at the time (year 1999-2000) applied to basically every Unreal Engine based game. Unreal Tournament 99 on High with additional high-res textures using S3TC at 1024x768 that was absolutely smooth on crappy S3 Savage3D 8MB was quite something. Mind you, people had Riva TNT2 cards at that time with 16MB and 32MB of memory and much more horsepower. Intel being in the process of creating 3D standards, I'm sure their engineers will cook up new things that will eventually be in use by everyone.

2021 is gonna be fun, at least in this regard. Corona can go f**k off.

They have 10nm CPU already with 10nm GPU built in it: Ice Lake.

10th gen mobile was released around a year ago, or will be close by the time Tiger Lake ships. Don't confuse with 10th gen desktop which was much later.

Both AMD and Nvidia are probably already going to do it with RDNA2 and Ampere.

Ray tracing with mobile grade ASICs was shown off in 2014 so I wouldn't call lowend ray tracing a game changer. It's just more tech to sell you since they've slowed down on advancing the GPU core itself

Turns out I didn't even confuse it with 10th gen desktop, but with the second wave of 10th gen laptop chips. Nope not a confusing release schedule.

For generational comparisons we should stick to initial launches and not any refreshes or new parts along the way. Take a similar situation with AMD Zen 2, we had the original launch in July last year, over a year ago now. When Zen 3 comes out we will be looking at that timescale, not the XT models that were recently released.

Well I've heard people in the R&D section of my work talking about the Intel GPUs but that's for HPC use but I assume it would trickle down to consumers from there
