How much would you consider Hardcore RAM OC

Hi, I'm starting to do overclocking lately and I'm building new PC for Gaming mostly and Doing some Overclocking. I own a pair of G.Skill Trident Z Royal 8GBx2 4266mhz 19-19-19-39 and I want it to run at lower CL to about 16-16-16-36 or even lower and at least 4400mhz or higher ram speed. Now I'm deciding to buy a new M/B choices between "Maximus XII  Hero" and "Maximus XII Apex" to achieve these ram configuration and be able to use them in real task. I been doing research and asking around alot of these answer came across my research "Apex is for hardcore Ram OC", so would you guys consider my goal a Hardcore Ram OC Task? then should I go for The Maximus XII Apex ( I'm not planning to do LN2 and other hardcore things) which have higher percentage of completing the task, but the Board itself lack of peripherals connectivity that the Maximus XII Hero have (5Gbps internet port for example) or a Maximus XII  Hero would do the job just fine.

So which is more important, RAM OC or extra features?

I mean.... not to be that guy, but "why"? If its strictly for fun, thats totally valid. Overclocking is a fun hobby and definitely nothing wrong with that. But, "using in real tasks" is a but of a weird choice of words. I guess my point is don't really expect much of a real world difference, unless of course whatever your applications are are very very RAM intensive, but if that was the case I wouldn't run OCed RAM for them... as most of them are scientific applications and I wouldn't trust possible errors messing up my results.

 

Also, make sure you have a good CPU as well. Mobo is important once you get up past 4000 MHz, but CPU is equally important. Also remember, at those speeds you usually start sacrificing CPU core clock potential for RAM speed which is a trade of most applications would not benefit from, but instead be hindered. Basically, make sure you have the best CPU you can get your hands on, 10900k is the go to option as it should be the highest possible silicon quality leading to the best chance of a good IMC, then a lot of time tuning and tweaking, and even more time testing for stability.

 

I am sorry though, I am not the right person to help with mobo choice. I just don't know which board has the best topology etc. But if your good with all of that, happy overclocking! And may the silicon lottery be forever in your favor :)

No problem :). As a second language.... your better than many who learned it as their first language so don't even worry about it. (some of us are just lazy.... i should use you're but im lazy lol)

 

Anyways though, for gaming, you will see almost no difference in performance. But as long as you know that, thats fine :). If you're doing it for fun, like I said thats totally valid, it is fun to do. But don't expect any performance gains... Basically, unless you already have a 10900k and a 2080ti, don't "waste" money on RAM overclocking goals if your intent is to get more FPS. But, if your happy with your performance and just want to have some fun learning how, totally a fine reason :)

because it's not a clear cut limit in overclocking for any motherboard, it's wrong to say "you need the Apex if you want 4400C14 since the Hero will only let you do 4400C16" or sth similar.

 

Then I think the Hero is more suitable for you, numbers you've listed arent that extreme anyways

The APEX is better for memory OC, however you WILL regret being limited to 16gb of ram if you plan to stay on the same platform for some time.

I was pleasantly surprised my 1866Mhz DDR3 CL9.9.9 does 2133Mhz CL11.11.11 all day in every app so far without issue the last 12 months..
Prior testing It won't do 2400Mhz but could do a 98% stable 2200Mhz (recently it crashed out for another test but had held for months at 2200Mhz CL11.12.11) so it's now at 2133Mhz CL11.11.11 since (Gaming only, no Work focus)

The improvement over 1866 CL9 can be seen looking at benchmark numbers (Gaming) but I don't know if I feel it any different because it likely only really improves those minor minimums and drops that are likely rare anyway in a decent Gaming scenario.


Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

The hero will clock memory fine. You'll probably hit the memory controller limit before you worry about the board.

 

If this was a binned cpu purchased from a known overclocker, maybe worth APEX and LN2....

The improvement over 1866 CL9 can be seen looking at benchmark numbers (Gaming) but I don't know if I feel it any different because it likely only really improves those minor minimums and drops that are likely rare anyway in a decent Gaming scenario.

I had a set of Mushkin Redline that where really decent. 2200mhz 9-10-9-27-36 @ 1.68v.

Anyways though, for gaming, you will see almost no difference in performance. But as long as you know that, thats fine :). If you're doing it for fun, like I said thats totally valid, it is fun to do. But don't expect any performance gains... Basically, unless you already have a 10900k and a 2080ti, don't "waste" money on RAM overclocking goals if your intent is to get more FPS. But, if your happy with your performance and just want to have some fun learning how, totally a fine reason :)
