Reapply Thermal Paste on Older Laptop?

I Have a think pad T510, that is about 10 years old, When it is under heavy cpu usage, it tends to throttle to down to 1.19 ghz after it gets above a certain temperature.Should i reapply thermal paste, if so, what kind/brand, and how do i apply it.

Thanks!

Yeah, you should replace thermal paste and clean out all the dust. Pretty much any thermal paste works.

To do it, just open up the laptop and dust it with esd safe brushes or compressed air. Then remove the cooler and clean off the old paste with isopropyl alcohol on something like a paper towel. Then put a small amount of the new paste on there and put the cooler back. The exact method of opening the laptop will depend on what laptop you have so just google the process for your laptop and guides should come up.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Everytime we get used laptops I test them for thermal throttling, if yes I slam some arctic MX2 onto it.

Mostly the thermal paste is all dried up.

PS: thats a thinkpad, there are official manuals from lenovo:

Whats is the difference between mx2 and mx4? Would both work for me?
