Windows update

DarkLegend

Hello there

So Yesterday i tried updating my windows version from 1709 to 1909 but when it was at 91% it failed and said it couldn't download when i tried it again later it still didn't work.

So i looked at Microsofts website for instruction when this happens but everything they listed there was ok.

So i really don't know what to do.

Thanks to all that will reply.

(Atleast i hope so xd)

If you don't find a solution, contact Microsoft support and try to talk with a rep who can do a remote access with your system and get it working.

Disconnect/shut down your anti virus and try again

Do nothing but the upgrade whilst your anti virus is turned off.

I tried to do that but still it didn't work

OK, uninstall your anti virus - make a note of any activation keys first.

Once you have uninstalled your anti virus try again.

Do not forget to reinstall your anti virus afterwards

Ok i'll try that tomorow

Are you updating through Windows update? It’s odd that it’s not trying to update to 2004.

Try to download the update from Microsoft’s website, I’ve had to do that in the past when I had the same problem. Another thing to check is your DNS, I’m using PiHole and it blocks Windows Updates for some reason, so depending on what DNS server you use, it may be blocking the update.

No worries, update failures are annoying to diagnose.

There are a bunch of things we can try but the easiest thing to get out of the way first is to try to run Windows update in safe mode. That will mostly rule out malware causing the problem.

Try that and let us know.

That update has been a shit show from what I have read. Microsoft is only updating peoples systems that they know for a fact it will work on. They have been working to add compatibility.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

These are the few reasons why the update would fail:

1) old BIOS/UEFI and needs an update

2) incompatible drivers (so update your drivers through the manufacturers website)

3) incompatible software (update the software)

you may be able to find things in the Windows EventLogs also.

As some have mentioned. Make sure your system is updated on all levels (Drivers, software, etc).

Another option that might work. Windows 10 has a recovery manager built in. In there it will allow you to do a reinstall without using a USB drive. HOWEVER there is an option to reset the Windows install with keeping your files. Id still backup those said files. Also your software will most likely be deleted but its better than the Nuclear option. Maybe a reset can Windows to where it needs to be. Possibly you have corrupted files or something that's causing the issues. Or as I already mentioned, the nuclear option. Reinstall Windows 10 from the newest installer.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

It’s not supposed to, I’m not sure why mine does. But if you wanted to, if you find what domain windows uses for updates, then you should be able to block it.

I just looked up driver to my motherboard and there are no drivers for windows 10

So maybe there's the problem xDD

These are supposed to be the most common causes for update issues,  They are definitely worth ruling out first.

Especially if you have old hardware or software on your system.
