Threadripper becomes Portable

Michael-K1

Summary

Here comes a portable pc with an enclosure coming from the '80-'90.

The basic configuration outperforms most of the computers around, and it comes with a Threadripper-3990X too.

Why it matters: The performance gap between desktop and mobile hardware still exists, which is why products like Mediaworkstation's a-XP are created to offer the ultimate in computing power out on the field. This portable workstation might stretch the definition of mobility somewhat, given that it weighs over 10kg (23 lbs) in basic spec. It does, however, make up for that bulk with beastly processing power courtesy of AMD's 64-core 128-thread 3990X Threadripper and Nvidia's professional/consumer-grade graphics, alongside generous amounts of RAM and storage for handling heavy duty computing tasks anywhere. My thoughts

Quite strange to be able to bring around a computer with these horsepowers, however it can be used to work on-site (i.e. update a realtime application on the fly, CAD, ...).

A bit worried about the temps and cooling system though.

I perfectly know that it is not compact, however I think that being able to bring around "easily" a computer like this is great

So portable in the sense that you also need/have portable power source?

Better add this on to the purchase:

All I can say is wow.

My first thought was exactly the same as @NZgamer's comment.

I would NEVER compromise performance or battery life for a FEW less millimetres. Can’t understand why APPLE do this!

Technically, Mac Pro is also portable. If you opted for the optional extra wheels :D

Ummm, who actually has a need for a machine like that in the field?

Is this a solution looking for a problem?

Sorta agreed. I mean, there is a need for portable workstations but this might be a step too far but all but the most extreme niche.

I question how giod the screen would be for video editing, or how rugged the thing is.

Seems more like a "because we can, and we want our names out there" kinda product

Would have thought anywhere now would have some version of portable internet to beam any info to a workstation/server to do the computer for them.

These types of "portables" have existed for a long time, go and Google the Panasonic Toughbook (though admittedly this thing makes a toughbook look like a macbook air).

They're main use is normally for rugged out of doors scenarios, think warzones or disaster zones. Someone could pull one of these out of the back of a jeep in an earthquake zone and very quickly be able to control the entire area from a single device, run recovery simulations or use it as a control terminal for drones and the likes.

Main Rig:-

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)
