Trying to put something together for my son... please help! 😁

Budget (including currency): $$$

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming, streaming, vr... ?

Other details I'm trying to put something together for my son. He is 15 and has been playing on Playstation since he was about 6 and in the last few years has mentioned wanting to switch over to PC... I have some what of an idea of what I'm looking at/for but also no clue in certain areas. I'm pretty sure everything I've picked will be more than he needs but I'm not sure it will all be compatible or if maybe I'm looking at too much. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

giving us an actual budget would help :D

but if $$$ means spending thousand of dollars then  you are better off waiting for the new hardware in just a couple months time, (though tbh no 15 year old would need a build of this caliber).

are you sure? most HEDT dont even cost above 2k, please reconsider.

if you are willing to spend this much then you are better off waiting, getting something high end now doesnt really make sense.

I think with everything I mentioned it comes in around 3k... 4k is just the limit if there were suggestions that might cost more. Not sure if I did the quote part right, hope so... its my first time in one of these chats.

I tried that website but not everything I have is on there. Like the liquid cooling pre made kit thingy which probably would cost a lot less if I knew what I needed to put it together myself... GPU had good reviews on Amazon,  thats mostly what I went off of. Im open to suggestions.

you dont need the liquid cooling kit (AIO, All In One), a good air cooler would do the job for cheaper.

$1000 for Storage?!?!  Did you even realize that?  Get some 4TB or 8TB HDD's for the mass storage, not the upper end of expensive SSD's.

Get him a decent GPU too, at least a 2070Super or 2080Super.  And don't pay for Windows like that.

3700X is more than he needs anyway, the 3800XT is a bad proposition.

do you really need that much SSD storage?

i think 500GB for OS and softwares, and 1TB for games is more than enough

use a hard disk for everything else, and less played games

as for CPU GPU mobo and ram, wait for the new stuff

but if you insist on buying it now, i would not get the 3800XT

get the 3700X, it's not too much of a difference

64GB ram is unnecessary, 16GB is enough for today's games (and streaming), 32GB if you really want to push it

that GPU in this budget? get something better, Nvidia GPU if he's into streaming and recording, NVENC turing is the best encoder to use now

and get a decent tower cooler, skip custom watercooling unless you are willing to do frequent maintenance and deal with potential leak. AIOs are okay if you like their looks, but not as reliable as air cooling

no comment on the PSU, not qualified to comment on that

no comment on casing, it's personal preference, but i would pick something with more airflow

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

64GB of ram may hinder your ram timings as it's harder to OC 4 sticks than 2, and 16gb are dual rank sticks i think, so timings are a bit looser

Thank you. He wants the liquid cooling because he likes the way it looks thats exactly it... i don't mind maintaining it but I was worried about it leaking... I asked him to name some games off the top of his head this is what he gave me, Rust, call of duty modern warfare, ark survival evolved, pubg and arma 3 and plenty more im sure... plus, streaming, recording, backup of other media and high school, thats about what it will need to cover.

if you need suggestions on that, i have listed a pretty capable but still cheap air cooler. should pretty much do the job of an AIO.

He wants the liquid cooling because he likes the way it looks thats exactly it...

you're easily spending $1000 on more if you go the custom watercooling route, plus the chore of building it and risks that comes with it

so think about it before proceeding

I asked him to name some games off the top of his head this is what he gave me, Rust, call of duty modern warfare, ark survival evolved, pubg and arma 3 and plenty more im sure...

should be very playable on a 3700X paired with a 2070S/2080S, though also depends on what resolution and framerate you're pushing

do you already have a monitor, kb, and mouse?

plus, streaming, recording, backup of other media and high school, thats about what it will need to cover.

i used to stream on a quad core with 16gb of ram, streaming isnt as demanding as some people think it is if you know what you're doing

i recommend storing backup on a HDD, cheaper per GB and you dont need speed for backups

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

if you need suggestions on that, i have listed a pretty capable but still cheap air cooler. should pretty much do the job of an AIO.

its going to have to have a lot of cooling power. He has burnt through like 4 ps4's and we even added extra fans on the last one. It gets so hot it literally won't let him play anymore...

this^ should be more than capable for your needs. just make sure you dont suffocate the airflow by putting it on a carpet floor or blocking the front mesh.

*also the tomahawk mobo is just a placeholder, if you have purchased the Tuf X570 then just use that.

he got a monitor a couple years ago but it was just for his ps4 so I don't think we worried too much on the specs I have the box...
