Bandwidth of second x16 GPU slot with 3rd gen

Can anyone please help with this?

I want to Install my graphics card jn the second PCIe x16 slot but I am not able to find(or rather not able to understand) the bandwidth of that slot from the official motherboard specifications.

I have a ryzen 3rd gen Matisse cpu.

Usually the second one is x4 and is connected to the chipset. (though this board could be different). 

Why not put the GPU on the first x16 slot?

The bottom PCIE x16 slot is only x16 in physical size. There are only x4 pins connected, which can be seen in the picture of the board:

The top slot doesn't let the gpu sit fully flush. The left end is slightly raised up by a mm. So I wanted to try it in the other slot.

I can't say how a modern GPU would fair on an Gen 4 x4 slot. Might be fine. You could test if there's a difference but traditionally the GPU always goes in the topmost slot.

 

Why do you want to put it in the bottom slot?

When the left side is raised up that's usually an interference fit between the 2 or 3 fingers on the GPU I/O plate and the loops they slot into on the chassis under the motherboard.

 

Did you try giving it a wiggle? Did you try pushing down on the I/O bracket? Does the rear of the card slot in properly?

You might need to loosen all the mobo screws and shift it a tad to fix the alignment with the case. But it's not even necessary, your picture shows the pins are well enough inserted in the slot.

 

Running from the bottom x4 slot would be pretty bad for performance.

Yes i pushed it hard enough. I think that the motherboard is sitting bit lower than the previous one so the IO is catching on to the case brackets. I checked the IO prongs and they sit okay at the backside of the case.

I tried that and it went towards the mobo io but the standoffs were not aligned at that point. I think my shitty chinese oem case is at fault here. Its a no name brand.

Phew, so that 1mm mis-alignment wont cause any issue in the long run. Feeling atleast relieved now lol.

This wouldn't make sense since the height of the case standoffs wouldn't have changed and the motherboard thickness wouldn't cause a mm difference. If it did none of the rear I/O would have lined up.

 

If you can get a screw to hold the GPU in place it should be fine. The pins appear fully seated in the x16 slot.

Ah, that's probably part of the problem. You're lucky the motherboard standoffs lined up with the motherboard holes. :D

 

I loosened the screws and it went in a bit more. Now only a bit sticks out. As you and others said if the gpu screws in then I am good to go and the pc doesn't crash, so I will leave it as it is for now. I will get a decent branded case later.

 

I have uploaded a picture of the current condition, a little bit of the golden fingers are visible but majority is inside the socket I think.

How well does the motherboard I/O line up with the I/O shield? Pictures maybe? Did the standoffs you use come with the chassis? 

 

I didn't think of the possibility a cheap Chinese chassis would have improper length standoffs. That's a real possibility and would explain the ~1mm gap.

The IO shield and ports line up perfectly. But the thing I noticed is that there is quite a bit of gap between the Audio ports and the metal part of the IO shield. This gap is absent in the usb ports.

This may mean that the bottom standoffs are misaligned and so the gpu does not fit properly.

Btw the IO shield is properly attached and it clicked itself in place.

Huh, hard to say then but it does sound like a problem with the chassis nothing else should be stopping it from seating correctly. Well you should be fine so long as the pins in the slot are making proper contact with the pads on the the card. It doesn't necessarily have to be all the way in.

The mobo is definitely about 1mm too low, the tabs between the usb ports should be centered.

Oh and btw another thing.

The gpu screw-in points in the case are stripped and I am using some m2.5 (maybe) screws with bolts on one end. Now the main question is that if those bolts will be able to hold up the weight of the gpu. Its a zotac twin fan 1660s, not a too big unit more like a mini itx dual fan version.

I have attached some images with some thumbscrews and pau screws as reference.

P.S: Don't mind the rusted screw. Already changed it.

PCIe4 x4 = PCIe3 x8 = PCIe2 x16

For most GPUs / use case it shouldn't be a big hit, if any at all.

If anything a proper nut would hold it better than a tapped hole in a steel sheet especially if said sheet has stripped threads.

 

For as heavy as some GPUs can get the friction between the screws & chassis that lock the card in place will keep it from going anywhere. You don't have to worry.

 

If you do ever plan to ship the computer though you may want to invest in a way to brace the card or remove the GPU entirely as the momentum from a drop can reek havoc on the card & PCIe slot. You also have to be careful if your CPU cooler is particularly heavy.
