I'd rather go for MP3 player, since it would not decrease the smartphone's battery life.

When my note 4 died i got an lg v20 half expecting the dac thing to just be a gimmick but it actually sounds much better even compared to the iphone 6 i was borrowing. so i would assume a device with all of the cost put into audio would be even better

This was probably one of the most disappointing LTT videos I've seen in a while.

They completely skip over most of the reasons people buy high end players, only going with the whole "don't you have a phone?!" argument; one that, if I recall, didn't go over too well with Blizzard either.

 

Instead of going with some of the better known cheap options like the Sansa Clip that @xnamkcor mentioned, you went with some unknown Amazon special that costs twice as much. You avoided brands like HiBy, which are known for putting out more affordable units with excellent spec (though I get that the high end one is there merely because you already had it).

 

This video just wreaks of something that was thrown together last minute with the bare minimum of research.

 

This is why I don't really watch LTT videos anymore.

 

But I get it. It works for your young audience, of whom will jump on the "haha, yeah, just use your phone!" line.

Pretty much all decent MP3 players will have expandable storage. So. You're free to add a ton of high speed storage for very little money compared to what it cost 15 years ago. If you went to a regular electronics store they likely didn't have quality MP3 players either. You have to go to a music store, or go online to get those.

 

I guess you didn't look at Sony? They have tons of players available. But, if you want bigger screens and more features, yes, you have to move up market. There's tons of options, though I don't know what you consider expensive. $200 seems perfectly reasonable for an MP3 player of higher quality. You also have the iPod line up. Great if you're looking for something thin with a less powerful amp/dac.

 

How are they to compete? I think you missed the whole point with your next comment; acceptable quality. Most people that buy MP3 players are looking for more than that.

 

I like large phones. I don't want to carry that at the gym, on a trail, or running.

There are many, many places where you can download albums in MP3 format perfectly legally with the revenue going to the artist.

Worth is subjective. Some people prefer something with a better amp that can power more headphones, or the better DACs, etc. Phones suck for decent quality music.

I do gotta say, it amazes me that people don't realize that there's online marketplaces other than iTunes or Google Play where you can buy not just MP3 format music, but all the way up to lossless FLAC music. Places like 7Digital for larger record labels or Bandcamp for artists that make use of that service often have their shit in lossless form, or at least in a high quality lossy format. 

Plus, if you want to use an MP3 player for Spotify, I'd say an iPod touch would be (one of) the best route(s) to go for that. They're relatively inexpensive, they're super quick, they have decent battery life if you just wanna play music and they can be had with a lotta storage if you need it. That or there's dedicated Android-based players that also offer that thing, too.

I have never owned a iPod touch but I don't really see the point in them as they just look to be like a small phone instead of a more audio focused device.

Realistically, they are an iPhone minus the phone calling features (well, at least by default). They're still damn good audio players, though, so long as you can deal with iTunes.

Yeah, it's sort of like....well I never looked I just assumed they don't exist. There's tons, even a lot of artists websites will have links to download their stuff. Which, really, makes the most sense. Why go through a middle man when you can just do that? I plan to get an older iPod for the living room. It'd be what most people are used to for changing music and such, but I'll stick with the higher end stuff from HiBy or Fiio for my own listening.

Anyway this thread was about mp3 players so here's mine

Eran-M22B-Clip-Colorful-MP3-Player-with-

Not much obviously, it's all in chinese but the icons help. I keep a 512MB card in it with well over 100 songs, it's enough I guess and if it gets stolen the thief wouldn't be able to use the card for a phone but at least he'll be able to listen to some decent music instead of the usual crap.

It has a tiny battery inside yet it can last up to 8 hours. 

Interesting. Pretty sad way to live, but to each their own.

You can easily find friends on OKC. I've done so many times. Same with Plenty of Fish. Sure, they're mainly dating apps, but you can find friends along the way as well.

 

Small players like that would be perfect for gym use. Though, I still like my Nano the best for that.

I've been through about 8 of them. Mostly used. And they usually get priced 10 USD because they look pretty generic and aren't iPods. I got a Sport for 20 USD a while ago because I was desperate for an MP3 Player(My headphone jack on my E200 broke. About 2 weeks ago I found a Clip Zip for 20 USD and I gladly paid it because it supports Rockbox and Sport doesn't. I think most of my Clip losses were buttons not working. But I sweat too much and wear it on my collar.

It's not about being cost effective it's about having higher quality music. You won't get as high quality music streaming, or getting it from Spotify. People paying for a decent mp3 player are more likely to care about that.

When the library was still open, they liked selling CDs for 0.50 - 2.00 USD. I think the 33rd year of my life contained about 99% of my CD buying.
