One of these is much more expensive by at least 2x. 4TB SATA SSDs run around $450 to $800 bringing the cost to around $15,000 at $500 a drive and tossing in expansion cards and whatnot. These are $400/TB

HQ would do about 6 weeks of footage, so 6 cameras could saturate it by recording a week's worth each

7 days has 21 8-hour subunits, so that'd be a little over 4 weeks for a 5-day work week (assuming the cameras start recording at the start of the day and stops at the end), or 2 weeks in XQ

An SSD like this would make sense for density oriented applications.
But competing with hard drives is hard since the main selling point of a HDD is that it is cheap per GB and can be accessed within a few ms.

Tape drives on the other hand are the true "low cost high density" format. 100 TB of LTO tape is a couple hundred USD, and potentially smaller than this 100TB SSD. Downside is their access time that can be in the many minutes to hours. (Just reading out 1 track from the tape takes over half an hour...)

Though, for 40 grand, I am suspicious to if one couldn't just use M.2 drives and get reasonably close in terms of density, especially when we consider price per GB.

So 24 modules on each side of PCB so 48 per PCB? so that means its 512gb per. So they could actually make 200TB drive with 1GB modules or even higher. Samsung has QLC 2TB modules which would be 400TB.

Believe it or not this drive is actually built with Canadian developed technology. That Novachips controller and the memory on the cards are the product of a company originally based in Ottawa which had their chip development division (called HLNAND and for a short time NDS Devices) bought by Novachips, a Korean company. I worked for the parent company before and after the purchase (not the chip division), but I actually still have a prototype SSD sporting the earlier NVS3600A controller. The idea behind the controller was the same as the LTT video demonstrates as it wasn't necessarily performance oriented but scalability oriented. In 2013 they were showing off 3.5" SSDs with 7.2TB of storage for example, and by 2015 they had a very long 32TB PCIe card absolutely packed with their HLNAND flash.

It's all in Utah desert used for the National Security Data-center.

The coating is probably the conformal coating on the PCB. If you scratch it off, you can probably read the IC numbers off it. However the FLASH controller is probably going to be a custom part, while the FPGA handles communication to the computer probably.

 

The estimated cost to make this device is about 3,351.89 USD.
