120mm AIO for a 3900x

Hi,

I am waiting my parts for my next build which will be a 3900x mini itx build.

There are the specs.

AMD Ryzen 9 3900x

ASUS ROG Strix X570-I

G.SKILL Trident Z RGB (For AMD) 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200

Fractal Design Ion SFX 650G 80 PLUS Gold Certified 650W Full Modular

Sumsung 970 pro 512 GB (Used)

Western Digital Blue SN550 NVMe M.2 2280 1TB

Zotac GTX 1070 AMP

5 fans upHere 120mm

I will use the stock cooler at the beginning but I am not sure about the stock cooler performance in a such small form factor and I like the aesthetic of the AIO. However there is only two 120mm spot on the case to put a radiator on(fitting a 240mm under the gpu seems unlikely) I wonder if a 120mm AIO can be enough to tame the beast ? I don't plan to overclock it.

About the cpu usage it will often be stress on short period of time (few seconds) and sometime (once or twice per month) on longer period (2-4 hours).

Are all the AIO equal ? Is there some comparison among them ? Maybe some of them come with thicker radiator?

I am thinking of h80i or the Asus ROG Ryuo 120,

Main System: Ryzen 9 3900X, ASUS ROG Strix X570-I Gaming AM4, G.SKILL Trident Z RGB 32GB CL16, GTX 1070 Zotac, Lian Li TU-150, 1X Samsung 970 Pro 512GB NVME SSD and 1X WD Blue SN550 NVME SSD, Fractal Design Ion SFX 650G 80 PLUS Gold Certified 650W Full Modular SFX-L Power

Server: 2X Xeon X5670 @2.93 GHZ, Asus Z8NA-D6, PIKE RAID Card DDR3 1333mhz 48GB of ram, 1X 1TB crucial sata SSD, 1X4TB HDD 1X3TB HDD

Laptop: Alienware 17 R3 6700HQ, 32GB RAM DDR4 2400MHZ, PM951 NVME SSD, GTX 970M

Peripherals: G910 Logitech Keyboard,Logitech G935 Headset, Logitech G502 lightspeed mouse, DELL 32 inch S3220GGF 165hz freesync

Can you fit an NH-L12/L12S in your case?

Most 120mm AIOs will realistically be very close to each other in terms of cooling performance, with the thicker ones coming out slightly ahead, though keep in mind that thick radiators work at their best in push/pull, so check for clearance on that.

I would also suggest taking a look at the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 120 and EK-AIO 120. They outperform Asetek AIOs and, at least in the case of the Arctic AIO, are actually more inexpensive too.

Also, I'd look for an SSD that's actually got a DRAM cache, which the SN550 lacks.

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

Peripherals: Leopold FC660C w/ Topre Silent 45g | Logitech MX Master 3 & Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed | HIFIMAN HE400se & iFi ZEN DAC | Audio-Technica AT2020USB+

Display: Gigabyte G34WQC

cramped case with horrible airflow for the rad, gets 94c in a 7 minute load, not sure about saturated temps

Spoiler

but considering 240 AIO and beefy air coolers all range around 80-85c at stock settings, i wouldnt be too surprised a 120mm AIO would go above 90c

no, you'll have to look at reviews where there are both products that you would like to compare in the same test.

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I probably can but I'd prefer an AIO. I like the EK very much I'll try to see review of it and make my mind about it.

This case can accommodate a pretty large air cooler.

These will significantly outperform a 120mm AIO for the same money. In particular the Dark Rock Pro 4, it is on par with some 240mm AIO's.

Well a 120mm AIO will perform like a mid range air cooler. Setting fans to push pull will help though, and you have the room in that case.

I'd double check but I think the Arctic Freezer II is one of the best option in terms of cooling performance.

Yeah the EK stuff is also solid, at a price premium of course. Just go push pull with the fans. I did so in my one ITX build and it made a substantial difference.

Just make sure you install that aio as intake to the front slot. It will perform much worse if you exhaust all the heat from gpu through it as well.
