what was the greatest nvidia gen improvements ever?

so rumour that rtx3080 is just 20% over 2080ti, are you satisfied?

although there could be ti / super coming...

 

i wonder what was their greatest leap in new gen (similar priced), so we could have a rough idea if 20% is really that bad

Not sure where you heard that 20% number, but latest I've heard is that the Big Navi cards are expected to be 40-50% faster than the 2080ti... I know AMD stands a decent chance of putting up a real fight with Nvidia this gen, but that would be quite the performance gap.

3080 over 2080ti is pretty decent actually.  Usually how it goes (this generation not included), the x80 becomes the new x70, the x70 becomes the new x60 and so on and so forth.  The new x80 is usually on par-ish or better than the Ti of the previous gen.  General rule of thumb for a long time, until recently.

Look at 2080, that's just 1080ti made with newer tech. 20% gain is already really good, those not satisfied should wait for 3080Ti instead

As long as there is no real competition the improvements will only be artificial.
Just look at Intel, they've held back so long now when theres finaly an alternative they dont know what to do.

But Nvidia improvements are just enough to make you buy it, or at least what they think you willing to pay. So the performance is not as high as it could be, but the price is. 😉

Through the years, NVidia has had some major leaps. Just depends where you look.

Cuda Cores back in 2007 was a major leap. We built onto that.

When NVidia bought Ageia physx, that was a big leap too. 

Fermi architecture had some pretty big gains actually. Decent overclocking potential also. (GTX 460)

Today it's Freesync and Ray Tracing and packing in more cores while reducing size and increasing power efficiency. 

 

20% is very interesting gains for doing some mining or F@H ect. Not to mention high end 4K/8K gaming.

Since SLI is squashed, they have to offer some decent gains, or no one will buy them.

5-10% gains just really isn't enough to shell out the money, unless you had the spare coin and wanted it.

 

But let's face it. What are the entry level and mid tier level cards going to look like?? That's where my interest is. 3080 is going to be out of my price range for sure XD.

i dont recall getting low tier recent yrs, gtx1650? 5500? nah , too pricey to be low end

6xx 9xx was ok on release, 1080 ti was great on release, 4xx 5xx was garbage, 20xx is not quite as bad as 4xx 5xx but not good either, so 30xx has a shot at being the best, possibly due to pressure from amd for the first time in 10 years (?)

The performance alone doesn't matter for most people, the price does. Even if the 3080 was 50% faster than the 2080Ti, if it costed $3000 most people would ignore it.

I really hope that if that 3080 20% faster than the 2080Ti is real, it would become also get a price cut and not a price increase, otherwise it will be probably one of the worst big node jumps in recent history for Nvidia.

Basically, if they repeat Maxwell(x80 ~15% faster than x80Ti but with a price drop) it will be good enough, if they repeat Turing then it will be really bad. Personally I would hope for such 3080 to not cost more than $600, anything more than that would be bad in my opinion.
