Rocket League Will Soon be Free to Play

Summary

Starting later this summer, the popular game Rocket League will become free to play. Those who currently own the game will get a legacy status (similar to the CS:GO Loyalty Badge). This will also come with some major updates to the in-game menus and make the game easier to explore. When this update comes, Rocket League will come to the Epic Games Store.

Quotes

Quote

After nearly five years, millions of players, and billions of soccar matches played, it's time to talk about the next chapter of Rocket League. The game wouldn't be where it is today without our dedicated and amazing community. Today, we're excited to announce that we're gearing up to make that community even bigger. Beginning later this summer, Rocket League is going free to play

What does this mean for the Rocket League gameplay you know and love? The core gameplay will remain the same, but we are refining the main menus to make exploring the game easier. Plus, we’re revamping and improving major features like Tournaments and Challenges, and introducing cross-platform progression! Rocket League action on the field will still be the same core, high-octane hybrid of sports and action you love today, and soon, even more players will share that love. That begins with Rocket League's release on its newest platform: the Epic Games Store.

(Rocket League Announcement)

My thoughts

As someone who currently owns Rocket League but never plays, I am excited for this. I think with the game becoming free, more players will join and it will be easier to play with friends. And I know @RILEYISMYNAME will be excited for this

I've contemplated the game a few times.  Some friends play it, but trying it briefly didn't make me think it was worth the cash.  For free, I'd definitely go thrash with them now and again.

Surprised they hadn't done that already. Would be more profitable for the game, even if the game is still quite popular.

Yup, usually happens when a game can't sustain its previous sales model so they try to shift it to a new one. The question then is, how will they cash in on it? Are micro-transactions a thing there?

I think I played it before, don't recall if there was a demo, or if they had a time limited free to play event of some sort. It seems the kind of thing I'm curious about, but not sure I'd play much. So free is about the right price there.

I've sunk about 1200 hours into Rocket League and I'm glad to see this.Although it will take a considerable amount of time before I see the new wave of players reach my rank, it's nice to know that eventually they will get there. Once your MMR is within the top 10% of players your queue times can be anywhere between a few seconds and 2-3 minutes (I know I know that's not that bad). Once your reach the highest rank (roughly top 0.2%) your queue times can be upwards of 10 minutes, if not longer. So new players are always welcome.

For those who are thinking about trying RL, my advice is to stick with it. You're going to suck major ass the first time you play. You'll struggle to hit the ball, won't understand all the controls, and you're going to get team bumped all game. Stick with it, and before long the game will begin to feel natural and you'll start building up your mechanical ability.

That’s nothing compared to OW DPS queues. The lowest they are for the competitive ladder are 12+ mins.

I loved the game. I started playing it on pc with keyboard & mouse, then switched to a ps4-controller which was a really badass improvement as It was much easier to play & then finally I bought it for my Xbox to play it while chilling in my bed. But then unfortunately my xbox live subscription expired so I've never played it again since 1-2 years. T.T

This is the biggest news. :/

My guess is that they are adopting fortnite’s predatory business model, which Valve does not permit third parties to do on Steam.

I have literally bought the game thrice - once on PlayStation 4, once on Steam, and lastly on Nintendo Switch - and I think the total billing that I've given Psyonix (and sadly Epic Games in the last purchase) comes to around £40, if even that.

I do enjoy the game though, I still play it from time to time on my Switch when I have time to kill and feel like playing car football. I've only ever touched competitive once, playing standard solos and gaining Bronze III rank, unfortunately my experience is people dropping out of games when they're 1-0 down. I don't play competitive anymore so I don't mind that, but I'd be concerned once the game turns free-to-play about what I experienced.
