Need upgrades??

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming primarily, office tasks when needed

Other details: Right now I have an older (2yrs) prebuilt ACER Predator with an i7-7700 and a 1080. 16gm single stick ram, stock cooler, 256gb Kingston m.2 (cheap), 1tb Samsung qvo SSD, 1x Seagate 3tb 32mb cache and 1x WD 3tb. I have no clue what the MOBO is...

 

I've had no problems so far with this setup but I'm wondering if it would be time to upgrade a couple parts to make it more future proof. I mainly game some simulators such as fs19, ets2, cms18 etc. I do play Rocket league quite a bit as well, which is my main game. I also play RDR2 and GtaV occasionally. I'm a casual gamer, far from trying to be competitive. I just enjoy a lot of games.

 

Would you guys 1, think I should be upgrading anytime soon and 2, what would you guys recommend based on the 750$ CAD upgrade budget. Keep in mind, my 1080 does the job so far so I was thinking MOBO, cpu, ram, aio cooler etc. 

 

If you guys seem appropriate to change the GPU as well, I'm open to suggestions.

4c8t is fine for now, the 1080 is ok to I would wait for RTX 3000 and RX 6000 series...

I would hold on. I pretty much have the same rig as you too. I had a 6700k @ 4.7GHz paired with a GTX 1070 and it was fine for me. I just wanted to dive into Ryzen recently, so my Intel rig is in another room for now. My 6700k ran well with my 1070 and my 2080 super. I'd save and be patient  don't be like me.

Well I've been wondering for a while! I bought that prebuilt after my old custom died, I didn't want to wait for parts... Now I'm craving to do a build!! I guess I can wait tho. Thanks for the feedback!

Honestly from FX-8370 to Ryzen 3600 & i5-10600 play-ability was not that much better except for the poorly made garbage games such as Rising Storm Vietnam & Warthunder since those game only ran on one core... :I (edit: point is 8-threads is fine except maybe for latest AAA games)

I know the feeling! I'm actually liking my Ryzen build so far. Just waiting for 4XXX series CPUs to drop, so I can put it in and test.

My very first rig had a FX-6300 paired with a GTX 660Ti. Eventually got a GTX 970 later and overclocked my 6300 to 4.6GHz stable

That's the thing tho. I never fiddled with overclocking either. I'm interested in the idea but I don't want to push/break systems!!

Even if you knew how it will not help since you need a K CPU and Z series motherboard!

Completely agree and aware. But if I decide to upgrade, I'm looking more for a bolt on solution anyways.

The components you mentioned are preety decent and i would definitely wait a bit more for some significant arrivals. Right now we have some similar mediocre products in the market hence waiting for AMD's 4000 series CPUs or RTX 3000 series GPUs. Till then keep your money aside and start adding few bucks from here and there to finally increase your budget for the big ones that will be here by early 2021s.

Save your money, especially when you say that your GPU is fine for what you want to do.

There's no point in upgrading just the motherboard, you're better off doing the motherboard and CPU, but then you may as well get a better case as well, since I imagine your case as pretty shit airflow. Upgrading when it already does what you want, just for the sake of buying is the worst possible way to build. Wait until it doesn't do what you want, and then buy.

 

It'd also help if you stated what resolution and refresh rate you're playing at. It makes a significant difference.

I....don't believe that for a second considering IIRC the i3 was more powerful than the 8370 when it came to most games.

I....don't believe that for a second considering IIRC the i3 was more powerful than the 8370 when it came to most games.

Which i3 do you mean? 10th gen? 4th gen? If the game scales well with the 8-cores the FX is more than enough to not bottleneck a Vega56/1070 level of GPU... Especially at 4.7GHz!

Actually, in this review (they're few and far between), it does about as well as a 2 core Intel part:

And how many of these games ran on one core? Its not the CPUs fault if the game is poorly programed... :I

really that's a terrible way to prove a point. Don't use reviews from 7 years ago to prove a processor is bad. Games have changed so much from only requiring one core to using more than 8 threads. Also in most new games that fx cpu should beat out the older i5s if all the trends of games using more cores are correct. Also even if the fx cpu loses it could be said that the fx cpu was smoother because of it's better minimums. Also know it would probably destroy an i3 that doesn't have 4 cores in most newer games by big margins.
