Need Recommendations

Hi guys, new here! I was just lookin for some tips about hardware. I have an old pc (specs below), and I was thinking of doing some cheap upgrades, mainly swapping the cpu for a better one and installing a gpu. What cheap cpu and gpu would you recommend?

Specs of the PC:

CPU - Intel Core I3-4170

RAM - 8gb DDR3

Motherboard - MB Gigabyte S1150 H81M-H

Power Supply - 600W

Storage - 240gb Kingston SSD, 500gb Toshiba HDD

Budget? Get an extra stick. Will double your capacity and practically double your bandwidth. 

As for the cpu and GPU.

What power supply is that specifically?

i think the 3600 is the best value cpu though you want want to wait for ryzen 4000 and theres new gpus coming also

I think by "cheap" the OP means "used hardware that I can just slot in the existing system". But we won't know until we get a budget.

What expectations do you have for the system?

Hi, i'm planning on buying used hardware so maybe around 175 to 200 dollars.

I've got 2 4gb sticks, i may upgrade un the future.

As for the power supply, i'm not un the us ir Canadá, so it's a local brand, not the Best, but quite reliable i'd say

Hi, thanks! I have 2 4gb sticks. As for the expectations, I am going to use the pc for everyday usa, light cad work and occasional gaming, I'd like it to work for that

If you can fit an extra two then do that

Get a 4770 for like 80ish bucks and then get a used 580 which should be good enough.

Check used prices in your area for the following:

 

CPU:

i5 4670

i5 4690

i7 4770

i7 4790

 

GPU:

RX 470

RX 570

RX 480

GTX 1050ti

GTX 1060 3GB

GTX 1060

 

I'd recommend spending more than 50% of your budget on the GPU.

It depends on the price. Advising against them without knowing local pricing would be irrational.

True but I wouldn't consider a 1050ti of a card with a small frame buffer ( the 1060 3gb).

And with OP's budget I would say a 580 should fit..

Lovely. I'd recommend finding a used i5 4xxx (You'll get a true quad core, turbo boost, and a little extra cache in some cases), and a lower tier GPU used such as a 1050 Ti, for a reasonable upgrade. 8GB is fine for CAD, as long as you aren't doing any CFD/other intense simulations.

 

As far as gaming is concerned though, it's as fast as you want to spend, particularly with the GPU. I'd recommend against any GPU faster than a 1060 6G, for most games, at 1080p60, with an i5. An i7 4790K would top out with a 1070 or so, in most cases.
