XMP + adjusting MHz (increase vs decrease)

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

I know when enabling XMP and decreasing MHz often sticks of RAM would decrease latency to match, what if I do it the other way around? Will increase MHz cause the sticks/board to automatically bump CAS latency to make it work? ūü§Ē

No, the board will not automatically adjust CAS or the other primary timings when you have XMP enabled since the CAS will not be set to auto.

However, other timings (some secondary and tertiary) will be changed automatically when you change the freq of the RAM.

decrease latency to match

Also, the latency is not "decreased to match" as you say. What is adjusted is the timings. Ideally the latency would remain the same, but in practice it does not and may decrease or increase due to changes in freq and timings.

So if I u understand right the fact that my DDR3-2133 CL9-11-11-31 when manually tuned to 1866MHz changed timings to CL8-10-10-28 is not normal? Or for that matter not really suppose to work that way?

So if I u understand right the fact that my DDR3-2133 CL9-11-11-31 when manually tuned to 1866MHz changed timings to CL8-10-10-28 is not normal? Or for that matter not really suppose to work that way?

You didn't manually set those timings? What board and RAM do you have?

Have tuned a lot a RAM and I have never seen that. My only guess is that the RAM had multiple profiles.

If you want to overclock your RAM past the XMP profile you'll have to manually set timings.

Okay if that is the case then I could simply try to see if reducing causes the DDR4 to lower timings auto, if not then manual will probably be needed for the other way huh?
