Is it normal for a SSD to have different number of chips?

Today I got my 512gb m.2 nvme SSD replacement from warranty and I noticed there are only 2 memory chips instead of 4, there's just that empty space - and it still has 512gb. So what's the reason for that? Does it affect the performance? looks kinda janky with only 2

There are standard sizes for memory chips, there is no reason for the manufacturer to use smaller than standard sizes, and pay extra for it. It also simplifies having many different skus. The chip sizes increase every year, so probably your ssd manufacturer just used some newer nand storage instead of the older and smaller stuff.

 

It could affect performance in parallel tasks, but probably not, depending on the controller.

The number of chips depends on the type of flash memory used on the SSD and the total capacity. Generally nothing to be worried about - number of chips is not directly affecting the performance of the SSD (but depending on other components, it could be a factor).

Different chips have different capacity.

They either gave you a newer SSD back or just replaced the chips with ones that have double the capacity.

That's what happens when they start sharing parts with SSDs of larger capacity. 4 chips for 1TB models for example.

 

Different batches can differ in configuration, just benchmark it and see if performance is still on par
