R9 290X Quiet Mode vs Uber Mode

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

Hello!

I have a Sapphire R9 290X Tri X. It has a switch on the side which can change it between Quiet Mode and Uber Mode (first I thought it was a dual BIOS card lol). Which I found out from https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/radeon-r9-290-review-benchmarks,15.html.

I got this card from my Uncle when he upgraded, and I didn't know what the switch did until 5 minutes ago, and he left it in the right position which seems to be Uber Mode.

Uber mode seems to get you a higher TDP.

Surley, quiet mode would give me better temps, right? I wanted your guys opinions on this because I've been having thermal problems with this card lol. And I just need to power down the system, switch the switch to the left position and then fire the PC back up and then I should be getting better temps.

What do you think?

Reference 290Xes, at least, only changed their fan curve depending on which vBIOS you chose. So basically on Quiet it would thermal throttle, and on Uber it would also thermal throttle as that cooler and GPU combination was a tragedy.

You could try it though, maybe it works differently on that card.

Have you looked at repasting the GPU though? Higher temps could be attributed to an old and not great factory TIM, especially since the Tri-X was quite a beefy cooler even for a 290X if my memory serves me right.

I have a very aggressive fan curve already on this card, and I have repasted it. I think the main problem is my case, it's an Aerocool CS-100, which is quite small.

I will test both modes tomorrow then I suppose

Yeah that case does not look even close to ideal for a 290X build.

What temps are you getting at the moment?

I've been watching Netflix and we're sitting at 43c 😬

In games it usually climbs up to the 70s and thermal throttles a bit

That sounds.. a LOT better than I was expecting.

My DirectCU II 290 used to hit 80-85C easily while gaming, maybe even more on hot summer days or with a toned down fan curve.

Thermal throttling in the 70s doesn't sound right. Are you sure it really is thermal throttling and not either running into power limits or it being limited by your 3200G, therefore not needing to push the clocks further?

What is the maximum temp that you're hitting in games? The R9 290X only starts throttling at 95ºC.

If you run a stress test such as Unigine Superposition, it should be mostly GPU-bound and max out your GPU usage. Check what the clock speeds are, what the usage is and what the temperatures are.

It depends what game, really, some games it gets to the 70s, some it gets to the 80's. I don't think the 3200G is the bottleneck though, I believe this card is around 1650 performance.

It's pretty similar to the 470/480ish actually.

Fun Fact: The Meshify c is the best case to ever exist.

In CPU heavy titles it will.

It's faster than the 1650, definitely. I'd say it's closer to a 1650 Super or RX 480/580, especially with a slight overclock.

@Husky @Mateyyy Here are my Unigine Superposition benchmark results:

Uber Mode

1415457786_UberMode.thumb.jpg.ba37eb7e4aff65e4739573519ec5bebb.jpg

Quiet Mode

1430253416_QuietMode.thumb.jpg.898ab9a6de4caca3a1b572100582bf40.jpg

The card did not throttle in either benchmark, and based off of these results, I'm going to put the card back in Uber Mode. The card seemed to run cooler in Uber Mode and get a higer score.

Still considering buying a better case with better airflow, though. Those temps aren't that great.

Those are really just margin of error differences.

A better case should help I reckon, since yours looks like it's actually got no proper ventilation whatsoever.

But I mean, AMD did say that the 290s were made to run at 95C, if that makes you feel any better haha

I already tried that but one time I was playing a game and it crashed and said AMD WattMan settings were reset. So nah. A better case will help, so I'm going to get a new case.
