Ideal frame rates

Johnny-Boi

hey, so i'm a console gamer (soon switching to pc) and, to figure out what to buy i wanted to know from people who have seen more than 45fps, what:

A. the minimum frame rate that you would consider smooth

B. The ideal frame rate for you is

C. A good place in the middle.

(also why does everyone skip over 90fps and just go straight to 120 whenever talking about this)

@Johnny-Boi or DM me on discord

PC is a work in progress, open to any tips and suggestions with ways listed above 😉

A. really depends on the game, if it was an indie game 30 is fine, if it is a "sight seeing" game i say 60, for competitive shooters 120fps is the minimum of what i would go for.

B. still stuck on a 60Hz so anything above should be fine, mostly depends on what monitor and game that you play

C. again, depends on what games you play and what monitor you have

Im weird and even though my monitors are 300hz or 144hz, i cant tell a difference. Anywhere from 60+ is the same for me (unless there is tearing or stuttering).

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

I just got my first 144hz display in the mail 1 hour ago and I've spent the whole time dragging windows around my desktop in awe of the speed and slipperiness.  I can't really tell the difference between 144 and 120 hz modes, but this is a bananas upgrade from 60hz.  This is a 27GL83a and I like it a lot thus far.

Frame sync makes a huge difference to perceived smoothness. I daresay I'm happier with 30-45 with freesync in almost any title except a fast shooter than I am with a juttery 50-60, or 60+ with tearing.

I mean the 'ideal' framerate for me is 59 fps locked. Basically 60fps, no chance of tearing. But I also have a 60hz non-framesync display...

A lot of people can't even distinguish between 100 and 144hz, so you're not in the minority. I would say that after 75hz, there are severely diminishing returns for perceived smoothness to the average consumer, but anyone who has played FPS titles on a 144hz for any considerable length of time will see it as a night-and-day difference

90hz monitors aren't very common. Most go for 144hz over 120hz at least everyone that I know and most of the people I see here, the common 120hz monitors are going to be 4K. With 1080p and 2k gaming monitors 144hz is the most common, with 240hz coming up now that it's become more mainstream.

If you're games and things are running at 60fps, then you aren't fully utilizing the refresh rate of your monitor. Playing a game locked at 60fps would completely defeat the purpose of having a 144hz or higher monitor.

I'd say 60fps is the limit for most people, it is a much better experience however to have a 144hz monitor with a computer capable of pushing out that framerate. Night and day difference. Depends on the person if they can tell the difference or not, but for me going from a 60hz display to a 144hz was astonishing.

Oh the way you worded your comment made it sound as if disagreed with it being a noticeable difference and that with a 144hz and 300hz display you cant tell a difference from 60. I'll quote it.

That is what I meant. I don’t doubt that others can tell a difference, but I’ve never noticed one. Monitor size and graphics quality make more of a difference to me.

Lol it is dog shit. There's a lot of dog shit 'enthusiast truths'. I made a thread about how a $400 gaming PC has perfectly acceptable performance and will run damn near anything at 1080p 60. I got 200+ replies of mostly vitriol and the thread got locked due to abuse.

People with a PS4 are living with 30fps. Me and my little sister still play shit on the Nintendo Wii ffs. 'Anything below 120FPS is a stuttery mess' is just laughable.

75hz freesync monitor IMO is really smooth to all but 0.01% of cases. Cause I'd argue that's the percentage of gamers who even have access to a 144hz display.

its actually a thing in that game higher fps speeds up your skill animations so you cant properly combo without 130 fps even 120 is probably low enough to drop a lot of combos. i dont want to work hard to catch a sorc in a cc only for them to get up and iframe away before i can kill them

i feel like no game should be like that, and it's indirectly pay to win, because people who payed more for a more for day an 2080 Ti, and 3900X would have an unfair advantage over other players. the devs should absolutely fix that. also about your prior comment, i was asking about how it feels, not the competitive advantage.
