I constantly find myself needing more cables so no, it doesn't stand. They're just plain useful with the sheer amount of stuff that uses usb cables and usb chargers nowadays.

But shouldn't you just buy some cables then? I did that some time ago when we only had 2 phones with USB-C, getting 2x 0.5m 1x1m and 2x 5m cables, not only are they useful, the longer/shorter cable helps when I need to move/don't need a long connection. Those 5 cables  cost as much as single charger, not to mention I got them to use with existing power sources(car charger, powerbanks) and didn't want any more chargers. With a phone you always get a similar length cable, so no matter how many phones I'd buy I wouldn't get what I needed.

I mean, in a way makes sense to sell a phone standalone, earbuds, charger by need. It sounds like cutting extras from the package, but let's get real, insane flagship prices, the "it's included" thing is a marketing thing more than a good selling point per say. Not like you got some value or even high end stuff included with expensive price. 

If I can get a a flagship phone for a bit cheaper alone and choose my self a higher quality earbuds (that I already have, or buy new), as well as faster charging that could be good. 

I really value a higher quality wired earbuds, as well as fast charging. Really something like 100W charger is what I'd like to see for new flagships. We don't need unnecessary e-waste that is true.

Which sucks for the consumers. I've joined the Apple crowd with iPhone XR and situation was somewhat normal at that time. And I just wanted to get rid of crappy Android because of garbage updating process and Google's data hoarding. And now I'll be pressured into dumb marketing and design choices by Apple which will cause everyone to copy them because everyone does that for some dumb reason which in return creates even smaller incentive for me to ever return to Android which means I'm stuck with Apple who's doing dumb things and everything just keeps on going in this bizarro loop... Like this stupid virus wasn't enough, we're getting this crap too. Yay...

i have 2 usb c chargers one by my bed and one by my office desk. if i get another one then ill use it at my work and if i get another one ill use it at the kitchen and then we are probably on another standard because i only get a new phone once every 5 years

And my alternative is what? Androids? Every single one of them sucks at updating as in, you're waiting forever to get any updates and then they kill them off after 2 years. And the fact every single Android phone is infested with Google's data hoarding garbage. No thanks. I'm forced to choose between two stupid options of which one is a lesser evil. And that happens to be iPhone at the moment. But if you can point me to a 3rd actually usable option, be my guest. I can assure you, you can't find one. And no, 3rd party ROM's are not an option since my bank started demanding phones to have a locked bootloader in order to use their app which also happens to be 2FA app for the web banking. Meaning I can't play with LineageOS and I sure as hell have no intention of fiddling with Magisk...

I'll vote with my wallet if I don't like what a phone OEM is doing, that's the great thing about Android, if I don't like what a company is doing I buy something else. With Apple you're stuck with their stupid decisions, it's bad enough companies copied taking away the headphone jack and gluing the battery into the device.

Apple missed a golden opportunity to use Apple Pay to require charging the phone. Proceeds go to some green environmental initiative. The less you use the iPhone, the less you're charged to charge

An argument would be that I needed to get those cables once, also, I know maybe 2 other people who'd use 5m cable, the rest should just throw them out? Anyway I was just responding to your need of new cables, not the idea of removing chargers.

I do agree with removing the chargers from phone packages though, simply because I don't need any more of them. It reminds me of situation with devices using 18650 cells, they come empty, but I can choose what cell I buy to put in, just as I could choose slow/fast/wireless charger depending on my needs without paying for everything to be sold with phone.

Make the price reflect it then. If it costs the same make it opt-in for free as I enjoy getting a charger and cable as I actually use them and the Apple ones are $15 new and for the USB C one it's like $30.

I'm for it on the principle that they don't restrict third party chargers/cables and don't use proprietary charging technologies that lead to semi-official monopoly exploitation.

 

Looking at you apple with your bullshit prices and actually pathetic quality on those components...

 

Also I have a very hard time believing these companies will pass any of those savings on to the consumer, so it's not great there either.

I think this is good in my opinion. I never use the charger my phone comes with, I have a hub with multiple USB ports that I use to charge all my USB devices. I can plug in my phone, iPad etc into it and charge everything off one socket. Having a ton of extra chargers just creates clutter, I have one extra charger that I leave in my laptop bag if I am travelling but thats about it.

You're giving these companies waaay to much benefit of the doubt if you think those saving will be passed on to the customer. It'll be the same price, but with higher profit margins, and they get to sell more chargers.

if wireless charging takes too long, you bought bad stuff. Works great for my iPhone and cheap AliExpress chargers

easy to do.. maybe unless you want to put charging pads all across your place. may as well buy a cable which has a quicker charge rate. oh and APPLE carplay is wireless. android auto is not. wireless charging takes waayy longer than any cable could for the same amount of money.

I have an entire 18 gallon tote full of cables going back to 1980. While I don't make a huge deal about e-waste, I can tell you that the reason I have so many cables is because half of them have proprietary connectors on them, like the Playstation connectors. I can't just throw those away. I haven't had to open that bin since getting the iPhone though. But that's because HDMI is pretty much the only cable I've had to deal with since the Wii U, Xbox 360, PC, and such all have them, and all came with them. (Well the PC monitor came with one. The Previous monitor I had to buy a HDMI-DVI cable.)

 

My mom hates cables because like me, she has a box of cables and no idea what any cable goes with, again stuff going back to the 80's. 

 

In fact most of the redudant cables/chargers I have are because the device it's for died and the device got tossed at some point because the charger/cables got thrown in the tote. 

 

Anyway to veer back to the topic. This is Samsung copying another Apple Move, but it's also the right move. Phones should have stopped coming with chargers when they switched to USB, but only kept doing so because they had proprietary fast-charging tech in them. USB-C PD eliminates this requirement to have proprietary charging, so there is no need for it.

 

... and if a phone has a fragile charging chip in it, that's the manufacturer's fault, and yes that's how my iPhone 6S died. I updated iOS and it wouldn't charge without unlocking the phone, and thus dead because of iOS, OR because the update killed the chip, either way I was not impressed with that, and had the phone not been disabled/wrecked I would have waited at least 2021 to replace it.

For cheap phones that don't support fast charging, I can understand this because every basic charger will perform perfectly fine.

However with phone that are capable of fast charging, that's a different story.

 

There are currently 2 fast chargers in my house, and both are from the phone they came with.

And while I do have normal chargers (or just usb ports/cables to charge them) basically everywhere. When I do need a quick charge I'm happy I have the fast charger.

I would honestly be very annoyed if my brand new phone with fast charging capability does not come with a fast charger to utilize the damn feature.

 

edit: also not putting a cheap charger in the box has been a thing for certain phones for years. My old moto G3 didn't include a charger. No big deal because it can't fast charge or anything but my moto G6 play DID include one because, fast charge support. And back when I got the G3 the reason was that you would get more phone for your money, which makes a surprisingly big difference when you are talking about a 150-170 euro phone.
