Replacement for 12 yr old machine

Howdy everyone. I haven't built a machine since my old P4. I have bought them pre-made since I left CompUSA way back when.

I am looking to replace my dinosaur of a machine with a rig that would survive another 12 years. 馃檪

Unless Intel announces a 10NM chip before October I am going with AMD a 3950X

I have a need to run Linux as well as Windows so I am tempted to run a hypervisor then virtualize both OS's.聽 I will need to see what the performance of that solution is vs. booting off of聽 a separate M.2 in a dual boot.

Country: USA

Currency: Freedom bucks

Budget: Within reason for a higher end gaming rig (3200 -3400)

  • Case: be Quiet! Dark Base pro 900 Silver Full Tower
  • MB: MSI Godlike E-ATX MEG 570 ACE
  • Proc: Ryzen 9 3950
  • Cooler: icegiant AM4 chipset
  • Memory: G.skill ripjaw 2x16gb DDR3600 CL16
  • PCIE 4.0 drive: 2 x M.2 corsair 1tb
  • Power supply: Corsair AX1000
  • Fan Cases: 140mm Noctua maybe 2 for exhaust
  • Graphics: Nvidia 3080 ( whatever Ti XT RTX ABC)
  • Fun Addon: Steam VR and Minecraft for Daughter.

My reasoning for the E-ATX is because of the IceGiant cooler. I want to make sure I have room between the 3080 and the CPU Cooler for proper airflow.

My reasoning for the Ice giant is my machines are a "set it and forget it" kind of thing.

I would prefer not to have RGB as my epilepsy does not allow such things.

The only real part I am concerned with is the Mother board.

Thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

K

You're gonna want to move up to a dual socket server board running an eypc setup. Start with a single socket occupied and add cpu's as you go. Otherwise the machine will run out of cpu power before that 12 years is up. Server hardware will also last a lot longer than consumer hardware.

The only reason my 11 year old board is still usable today is thanks to it being multi socket , if i were running a single socket machine from 11 years ago I'd have never stayed with it this long

Is it the Godlike or the Ace? The Godlike is extremely overkill. The Ace is still more than you need to spend, but in a high end rig is probably justifiable

E-ATX motherboards are longer in the horizontal direction but the same height as ATX so idk if it will have any affect on the distance between GPU and CPU cooler.

Also consider waiting for Ryzen 4000 at the end of the year, however going for a 3950x and a new ampere GPU still seems like a pretty good plan

It's an awesome board but at about $700(more than the 3950X) do you really need it? A $200-300 board should do just fine in most cases. If you want an extreme high end board the Aorus Extreme may be better - gives you 10gig LAN.

As far as power delivery and VRM cooling, going for a cheaper board will cut very few corners, you just may lose out on some high end I/O, like 10gig.

If you think a cheaper board would be fine, look for the X570 Tomahawk.

Other than that, pretty much all the boards around $300 are equally good.
