Just bought my very first AMD GPU and already regretting it...

Man
Okay, I've recently jumped ship from Nvidia to AMD. Bought an HD7790 to replace my GT440 and I'm stuck on the very first step:

Drivers!

I... can't seem to figure out how to install the video drivers. I've always considered myself a tech savvy person, until now. This will be a bit lengthy, so kindly bear with me:

  1. I went to AMD website, chose my video card and the site brought me to this page: https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-hd/amd-radeon-hd-7000-series/amd-radeon-hd-7790. Kindly open this page for reference.
  2. I'm currently running Windows 8.1 Pro and according to this page the latest driver for my OS is almost exactly THREE YEARS OLD! Is this correct or am I missing something here? Even Windows 7 seems to have the latest driver available but not the 8.1! Never encountered any such problem with Nvidia.
  3. Win8.1 has two driver... 'versions'. Crimson ReLive Edition 17.7.1 (Optional) and Crimson ReLive Edition 17.4.4 vanilla. I'm assuming the optional version means it's in beta and I should install the vanilla, but slightly older version for better stability, correct?
  4. Confusingly, Windows 10 and 7 seems to have another software called "Adrenalin 2020 Edition", instead of Crimson Relive Edition, which has the same 'optional' and 'vanilla' flavors and has been released in 2020. Can anyone tell me the difference between Adrenaline and ReLive?

So... Do I have to go to either Win10 or 7 to get my hands on the latest drivers???

Please tell me I'm wrong!

That's how unloved Windows 8 is. I dont think they will stop you trying 20.5.x drivers but thry havent tested anything on Win 8, expect glitches and errors since AMD drivers arent the best in stability even on platforms they've tested

Windows 8 isn’t as widely used as win7 might as well move up to win10.

Use the Windows 10 driver, and while you're at it use Windows 10 also, it sucks less ass than 8 (but not by too much). Anyways, don't let this minor confusion change your entire outlook on AMD GPU's (remember, you're looking for drivers for a 7 year old card). I switched from a 290x to a GTX 1080, simply because the deal on the 1080 was too good to pass up. But right off the bat, I had nothing but issues with Nvidia drivers, after having very good experiences with AMD cards (still love em!). After ironing out some issues, my 1080 has been rock ass solid. Just gotta work into it a bit, that's all.

Believe it or not, I knew what I was getting into when I decided to buy the 7790 over the GTX560Ti. My GT440 is 100% rock solid to this day, even with a 'hacked' BIOS, and I knew an AMD GPU won't be able to match that, because of the drivers which I can understand. But this is beyond absurd.

Just didn't want to have another bloody Fermi (they're... hot!) and the GTX650 vanilla is just too slow to run modern games such as RE2 Remake and Hitman 2016 at 720p 45ish FPS with low-medium settings. 7790 was the best thing I managed to find for $25!

That's in stark contrast to my experience with Nvidia. My GT440, even with a custom modded BIOS, was (is) 100% rock solid at 391.35 (the last driver for Fermis).

Anyhow, it seems like I've no option but to move up to Win10. Don't want to go back to Win7, that's for sure!

Windows 8.1 wasn't very popular (most people stayed with Win7), hence why drivers are.. meh.. on it. I'm sure the Windows 10 drivers should work.

Adrenalin is the driver and ReLive is an optional extra that is for recording and streaming gameplay.

But there's no 'Adrenalin' for Windows 8.1. Only ReLive?

So, does it means there are no drivers at all for my poor 8.1?!!

Catalyst software suit for CCC which used to be the drivers. It's under the other Windows 8.1 headers.

I use it for an even old gpu for potato sidekick

Forgive me for being ignorant but... I've no idea what you just said!

What exactly is the difference between Catalyst and Adrenalin? Do you mean that Adrenalin, which I think is the driver, was formerly known as Catalyst?

Catalyst were the old hideous drivers. Adrenalin is the new version

I apologize for repeatedly bothering you mate but... if I install the "ReLive" version from 2017 on my machine, will I also get the basic drivers with it?

Will I be able to play older games such as Fallout 4, for example?

I'm definitely going to upgrade to Windows 10 but... I just want to test out the card for the time being and also want to back-up my data and stuff before upgrading.

Thanks a TON for your help and patience, mate!

Downloading circa 2017 ReLive drivers, as advised by @NZgamer and shall upgrade to (the dreadful) Windows 10 in the coming days as there doesn't seem to be any workaround.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

More drastic measures.

(Read followup comments about later version drivers)

OP. Hope you sort it out either way...
