Re installing windows

Posiedon101

I recently got a laptop that came with a ssd but I wasn't installed on it. I have tried cloning and going into the bios but that didn't work (to boot from ssd) so I was going to reinstall windows completely. I was wondering if when I did that if I needed the activation code or if it was saved to my Microsoft account.

Thanks

no the windows key should automatically reactivate when you have access to wifi. So yes if you use the same microsoft account to log back in you should have no issues

If you registered your current installations product key with a Microsoft account and you login to that account on the new machine the key should transfer and remain valid.

If you're looking to have both machines working and valid with Microsoft Windows most consumer OEM keys are suppose to be 1 time use, or 1 per computer. This means you'll have to buy a new key for the 2nd install.

...if you want to go about it legally anyhow.

If the key is linked to the microsoft account (done in the windows settings) all you need to do is log in with your microsoft account on the fresh install.

You can only use this on one computer though, so you can't have two computers with the same license.

You would need to buy a second license for the new laptop if you are still using windows on another computer.

Or, use windows without activating it, that costs $0.
