Difference in G Skill Trident Z Neo models

I am looking to buy 16GB (8x2) RAM for my Ryzen 7 3700X equipped PC. Based on some initial research I have found that memory speed makes a decent impact on performance in gaming with Ryzen processors and the sweet spot is 3600MHz since that can run 1:1 with the IF clock at 1800MHz. Based on that I am looking at two different but similar RAMs-

 

  1. G Skill Trident Z Neo 3600C16D-GTZN (Timings 16-16-16-36)
  2. G Skill Trident Z Neo 3600C16D-GTZNC (Timings 16-19-19-39)

I also read that memory with better timings will give more benefit compared to faster memory, so I am also planning to tweak the timings a bit using the Ryzen DRAM calculator. From what I've seen the Samsung B-Die is best for this and I'm not sure but I think the GTZN version has the B-Die while the GTZNC I know has S K Hynix die. 

 

How much performance difference will I see between the two if (a) I just load the XMP profiles (b) I manually change the memory timings based on the DRAM calculator? Is it worth spending the extra money for the tighter timings?

From someone who over-spent on memory and has spent weeks worth of time manually tuning memory timings, it is absolutely not worth the effort and spending extra on tighter timings is not worth the money.

 

That being said, it's your money, and it's your time. There is some benefit, and if it is worth it to you, then it is worth it.

 

Memory overclocking is about the most tedious and frustrating thing you can do, and I'm addicted to it.

3600 16-16-16 is too tight for factory voltages to be anything but Samsung B-die. That said unless it's significantly cheaper than usual, it wont be any good value.

just grab these, increase voltage, set it to cl14, you can mess with other timings later down the line

a year ago, it was like 50-100bucks more for a 2-3% increase, now it's...15dollars more, it's worth it.

 

The diff btwn cl14 3200 and 3600 is about 3-5% in 1% lows AT MOST. from 3600 to 4000 it's like 1-2%, a bit more for zen 2.

If you aren't looking for RGB then this is probably the best price-to-performance b-die at the moment.  And I always recommend b-die if you like to tinker.  You'll have much more fun tuning b-die than something else.  You can get lower timings throughout the stack.
