Gaming on Threadripper vs Normal Ryzen

Are there any benefits to running a game on 3990x, 3970x, 3960x, 3950x, vs 3900x? What if they were streaming how would it change for each CPU then. 

 

This is because my friends works at a media company that has threadripper PC and plays games during lunch. Just wanted to know what the expected difference is (maybe assume using a 2080 ti)

No 

Doesn't boost as high, and the games won't utilize more then 6 cores at best.

X264 us pretty good on a consumer cpu 

TR's are made for heavy workloads on workstations , running a lot of ccds and cccxs and have a lot of lanes 

Not to mention it's platform is expensive as hell and won't even be utilized.

I have a Threadripper (1st Gen). Was mainly a Work-PC, now it's just for entertainment (-> games) and will soon be replaced by Ryzen. Works fine (with a 1070). If you build a new PC for gaming, I would go for Ryzen. Threadripper is overkill and single core is not it's strength.

The biggest problem gaming with Threadripper is the NUMA nodes,

The cores in the CPU are separated into NUMA nodes,which helps managing memory for a large amount of cores.

So if the game uses cores from different NUMA nodes performance will tank.

Buy a ryzen and spent the extra money on memory, a higherend graficscard, storage or the best choice RGB!!!😀

Both can game, this is like asking can you play with Xeon cpu. Yes you can.

Thread ripper is not optimized for high clock speed, unlike Ryzen.

Higher clock-speed is preferred in games.

The reviews of the 3960x and 3970x shows they perform extremely well in games. Performing around 9900k performance.

The chips have the same maximum boost clocks as the faster ryzen parts, and while they cant hit those clocks "All-core", gaming loads are sufficiently lightly threaded  (compared with their core counts) that they do boost up and beyond the likes of a 3600.
