Should I get a big SSD for my boot drive, or a very small one?

Hey everyone,

Basically, I'm just wondering if it would make more sense for me to get a big boot drive that I would store Windows along with other games and applications on, or should I get a small 250gb or so drive just for windows, and separate drives for everything else? Thanks!

single big one, too much get put on the windows drive for it to make sense to split it up across a few

a lot of posts when a single post would have been fine for all these questions. as far as the question, it depends on needs and budget. you could use a smaller ssd for a cache with an hdd for storage as a budget solution, or if cost isn't an issue, go for a 1-2tb nvme.

I probably shouldve specified: Im getting 4 drives. 1 that windows is on, regardless of capacity, one more m.2, and then 2 2.5" SSDs.

Because Im building in an SFF case, the only storage space i have is 2 2.5" drive spaces, and my motherboard will have 2 m.2 spaces. Because I do video editing and have a fairly large steam library, I would like to max out my storage.

But 2 1tb drives will cost more than 1 2tb drive. You can get the same amount of storage in fewer drives for less. Getting fewer drives that are bigger also leaves room for upgrades.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

then get 1 large 2-4tb M.2 NVME for windows and game storage.

get a 500-1tb M.2 Samsung drive for editing off then a pair of 5tb HDD in raid 1 for safe storage.

Ok. Although I was mainly wondering if its better to have windows on a big or small drive if you have other drives for games, videos etc.

I'd put games and windows same drive. edit off a different NVME drive

games are mostly read after they are installed vs video editing is lots of reads and writes if you constantly work on new projects. the writes  will end up being what kills a drive so I'd put it on a different drive that is built for good speed and endurance (a Samsung 9x0 evo/evo+ or pro)

I've written 27tb to my main OS drive over the last 4 years.

Personally I recommend 500GB-1TB for a main boot drive and if you need more space just get a 1-2TB HDD down the road. Although getting an SSD with DRAM cache is important for a boot drive and those can cost a bit more.

That said the 1-2TB range is usually the best $/GB option.

For SSD's (assuming USD):

For NVME:

I think the 1TB Crucial P1 is a great option, NVME with DRAM cache.

Either go full SSD without any HDD in the system or go hybrid using small SSD 128GB and more) along with huge HDD and pair them with PrimoCache. It's just a much better experience. I still don't get it why people even use SSD boot drives. Back in the day or now. It's the dumbest setup possible if you ask me as you're only speeding up system boot and few apps that have to be installed on it specifically and nothing else. Where hybrid accelerates Windows, all the apps and all the games and everything else located on the HDD.
