"Premium" features you don't actually want in a flagship?

Whenever I see screen resolution about 1080p in a mobile device, it always put me off. It's just one more battery drain for something I don't notice at all. Even on a TV, 4k is overkill for me.

Probably the lightning connector. Almost every charger I use now is wireless, CarPlay and syncing is also wireless. No need to have it. Controversial, but I'd prefer the device to be more waterproof.

On laptops, stop pushing 4k especially when that's the only option for touchscreen. Just make touchscreen a standard option. Why do I have to pay 500 bucks for a resolution I won't notice, when all I need is is touch capability?

You can easily tell a difference between 1080p and 4K on a laptop, especially on 15 inch models.

There is a particular reason for hiDPI screens, and that mostly comes down to font antialiasing.

 

Like there is a night and day difference in legibility of fonts when the OS operates at 4K. Then you go back to 1080p and 720p games and it's like like grease is smeared on the screen.

 

Point of interest. Games should explicitly allow setting 720p, 1080p, 2160p, or 4320p 16:9 resolutions and even if the monitor does not support it, scale down rather than letting the monitor or gpu scale it up. Without integer scaling, upscaled games become very eye-straining.

 

Now the flip side of that is that many games don't really look any better at higher resolutions. 4K largely affects the draw distance and particle effects, while anything close to the camera still looks awful at any resolution. So if you're playing a game that was designed at 4K, it looks nice, but a 720p game running at 4K still looks like a 720p game. As an example of how terrible this can get, take a look at N64, DSi and PS1/PS2 games that have been rendered at 4K. They often look blocky because the extra resolution is outside the game's own precision. Another example of this is Adobe Flash, which has a maximum canvas size of 16K, but if you actually scale something up to 16K, it has no precision for motion tweening, so things jump accross the screen instead of moving in sub-pixel increments.

 

As for features that I think show up in things that are unnecessary. 

- touch screens in laptops, that's all I need are smears on the screen while I work.

- touchpads. I hate them and I wish we could go back to trackballs or accupoint.

- touch screens in desktop monitors. Good god Wacom, not you too.

Touch screens are only desired on products that are designed around touch, don't add it to things that were not designed for touch.

 

Also, nearly all bluetooth devices are terrible, and do not deserve to be called premium or luxury. Headphones/headsets routinely do not support all the necessary codecs, keyboard and mice vendors have largely abandoned it, and it seems that the only place bluetooth gets any use is with vehicles handsfree systems.

5G is also something I really don't care about, and it's sad that it's raising the price of Snapdragon's best chips. Yet again, pointless overkill.

I want a great front cam, SCO, medium amount of ram, storage and a clean OS that gets updates. rear camera doesn't really matter to me, a big battery

 

I use my camera for real pictures but I end up doing lots of video calls with the front camera so I actually care more about it than the rear.
