What layout would you want in a custom keyboard?

kelvinhall05

Hi guys. Planning on designing a custom with basically the single goal of being as cheap as possible (I am hoping around $50 for case/plate/pcb but don't wanna say too much yet).

Anyway, as part of my planning process, I am wondering what kind of layout you guys would want in a custom.

I am not interested in specifics. Mostly just want to know like "TKL" or "40% ortho" or "southpaw 60%". If your preferred layout is over 100 keys, please also suggest one you'd be fine with that is under 100 keys.

Thanks!

TKL is the lowest I could go, too much functionality lost (disregarding secondary layers, which is not something I want to be forced to use on a regular basis) with 60% or lower.

I also suspect you'll have a difficult time building anything larger than a 40% for $50, especially $50 Canadian.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

0% keyboard because that's all I can afford

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

I have my ideas. I think I can profit even with it costing about $50.

Don't wanna say too much rn especially as I still have a lot of things to decide.

I would love a 65% keeb... But it should hav an standard bottom row....

Like keycap swapping... :3

Lowest I could go would be tkl, considering I use the ‘delete’ key, etc a lot.

I like the looks of 75% keens, but would probably go for a tkl.

If the keeb has something like QMK, I’d go for a 65% hand-down, and replace the page-up, etc. for keys I actually use.

60-65% is my preferred size. Right now I have a magicforce 68, but I'm starting building a 60% using the HS60 PCB. I just wish that you could get slightly taller than 60% boards with the F row added, but no others.

As said above, QMK or VIA is a must for the firmware, as it gives so much more flexibility to what keys people have set up.

Yes, QMK will 100% be the firmware. That is basically the only thing I am 100% set on.

Anything less than full size is unacceptable for me. Numpad is essential when you are typing on none latin alphabet.
