Can anyone ballpark a prediction of price drops to current gen GPU's when Nvidia and AMD's new GPU's come out?

Joe Brainer

I've been sitting on my teeny little 1060 for some time now, and I want the RTX experience for Cyberpunk 2077. Looking at the 2060's, maybe even a 2070 if the price comes down enough.

I save a percentage of my payday, but I don't want to oversave, or undersave. I don't make a lot of money.

Trying to prepare in some way. Balance my income with saving.

Not buying used, I want my warranty and I don't like gambling.

Thanks ahead of time for any input and or suggestions, I like having multiple opinions, and I frequently try to learn from them.

Sure, look at previous gen releases and their effect on the pricing of the gen before them.

Well the 1000 series didn't have any price drops i could see, they just disappeared from the shelves. That might had something to do with the 2000 series very very disappointing launch, but still, not very promising.

If amd doesn't bring out something truly groundbreaking (they most probably won't), expect price drops in the range of 10-15%, if at all.

The truth is, if you are not buying used, you probably won't see huge saving. The new gpu launch is the best time to buy used, as market is filled with people upgrading(if it is a decent upgrade).

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Well considering used prices have only gone up since tariffs and corona I would suspect it will be another year before prices normalize again.

I can sell my old stuff I got new or used a year or more ago for more than what I paid for it then.

Super easy to predict...they won't drop.

They never did, and never will...when new cards come out the older one start increasing in prices until they're gone.

Prices always reflect their performance relative to the current generation even in the used market.

My gtx1070 would still fetch ~$250, whilst a 1070ti ~$290 which is the relatively the same performance as a new RTX2060 ~$310.

So honestly I wouldn't expect massive discounts, it's just not how Nvidia operates. They just stop production or cut the silicon down for sales in lower end parts (see 2060 ko)

Historically (and talking in very generalised terms) When a new generation comes out, the product stack all shifts down one slot in performance terms. IE a 1060 is roughly as quick as a 970, or a 2070 is roughly as quick as a 1080 etc.

Thus the prices of the used cards shift in relation to the price you can buy the same level of performance new.

This generation was a bit weird, because the performance stack all shifted down as it normally does, ie 2060 gives 1070 performance, but they priced 2060 at 1070 levels, which meant across the stack eveyrthing just stayed expensive.

So to put that into some vague numbers... if a 3060 comes out at $350, with 2070 super performance, then clearly no-ones going to pay more than $350 for a used 2070 super, because you'd be better off buying the new card with a warranty. Thus the price of used 2070 supers will end up falling down below $350 by some amount.

Clearly, until the performance and pricing of the new generation of cards comes along, we simply cant know the exact numbers.

edit: sorry, i see you were asking about new. Thats less clear cut, but generally the same thing applies. Either the retailer reduces the price such that the 2070 is priced favourably with the 3060, or, well, you just buy the 3060... Generally manufacturers and retailers try to clear their inventory beforehand so as to avoid lots of dead stock stuck in the chain. Personally, if new is what your buying, i would simply wait until 3000 arrives, as its likely your going to get 2070 performance from 2060 moneyn anyway. Additioanlly the new gen might well have significantly improved RTX performance.
