Steam support coming to ChromeOS soon

Summary

A few months ago, there were reports that Google and most likely Valve were working on the support of the popular gaming platform Steam to come on Chrome OS. Discoveries have been made by 9to5google on how it will work and which Chromebooks it will first support. As of now it will start with the laptops that have the 10th gen Intel processor.

 

ChromeOS supports running Linux apps under the project “Crostini”. It does this via running an entire Linux distribution in a virtual machine. 9to5google tracked a new project within the open-source code of Chromium called “Borealis”. This appears to be related to virtual machines for ChromeOS. It turned out to be a full on distribution, which unlike Crostini that is based on Debian, Borealis appears to be based on Ubuntu.

However, we found one key difference between Borealis and a normal installation of Ubuntu, as Borealis includes a pre-installed copy of Steam. This lines up with what we learned at CES 2020, when Kan Liu, Google’s director of product management for Chrome OS, shared that the upcoming Steam gaming support would be based on Linux.

 

Personal opinion

I haven’t heard much about ChromeOS lately (actually nothing), but this is still a rather interesting yet unsurprising news, especially considering that Valve has made a lot of effort into the development of Proton and the fact there have been some reports of it being made earlier this year. Regardless, this feels rather welcoming to the OS, even though it’s marketing share is rather low afaik.

I can't wait to play Rust on my N3350 and all four gigabytes of RAM.

 

Seriously, I get it, an OS is an OS is an OS, but I question how much Steam on Chrome can realistically take off when the overwhelming majority of Chromebooks run on hardware so low-end that the right set of circumstances in SimCity 2000 would murder it.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Not to mention that a lot of Chromebooks use ARM processors,so those might need to emulate X86 or some kind of translation layer.

With that they might be able to run old games from GTA VC/SA era. Don't know exactly how good of an experience it will be though.

They're more of a "LOOK AT THE SHINY" line of reasoning.

Based on my high school, which I would know because I personally unboxed and deployed every Chromebook they're currently using, they'll probably go for Celeron-based books because they're cheap and easily replaceable. Also, there are policies that schools can put on Chromebooks to restrict the ability to install software without administrator approval. Whether or not every school has store policies in place, I can't say, but I'd assume that it's the case.

 

It's not like the kids using them are gonna be doing more than writing up documents and making PowerPoint presentations anyway lmao

I currently do deployments for a living.

 

I've only seen one school without any sort of user access control policies, and that was a small religious charter school that received no technical support (from what I could see). They didn't even know how to set it up to include parental controls.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

Many order products, then we get them ready, and we ask when and where they want devices allocated, and they just..... have no idea. Half the time some of them take weeks to respond. They just leave a few thousand devices sitting in our warehouse space. Most of the time I show up and everyone thinks I'm a school employee.
