How long before switching out PSU?

Stahlmann

Hey everyone,

i bought the Corsair RMx 650W in 2018. I guess i'm lucky i bought a nice one because at the time i didn't know about the Tier list etc. I'm just curious, how long is it until i should switch it out? Warranty is 10 years. I know PSUs have a pretty long lifespan, but when they fail, they can take everything in the system with them. The wattage and general performance should be good enough for any upgrades in the next few years.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

from my experience it depends on the unit. Thats a solid one so i would say it would do good for around 6-7 years. You should always switch out eventually because as you said if the psu falls the rest of the system can follow.

I would recommend switching your psu out every 5 years or so if you are concerned about it destroying your pc. I had an old pc so it doesnt really matter that it died, but i started my pc and the fans went to 100% and than it shut off and didn't turn on again. I tried a different mobo and that also died. Conclusion the psu was faulty. Now this was a very crappy psu from an unknown brand, but is still has been used for 8 years without any problems. In your case you have a pretty good psu so yeah.....

Switch it if the wattage demand of your system goes up

Or if it starts to show age ( inconsistent power delivery etc ).

The RMx has a 10 year warranty so it should last a while.

When you build a new PC consider then whether or not you can keep your current PSU or if it is worthwhile buying a new one. That'll really depend on when you build and what new hardware you're using. Just don't be one of those people that build a new system with a $1000 graphics card and $500 CPU but keep their mediocre PSU from 2011.

10 years warranty, it might work more than that.

I say year 8, you might still get a good price since it sitll have 2 more years.

I switch out mine on motherboard updates if the PSU is not modular.

I also look for PSU deals throughout the year so when I do a build or rebuild I have a new modular one on hand.

Yeah i'd definetly upgrade when i have a more power hungry CPU. But my 3700X combined with even the highest end gaming GPU should still be no problem for my PSU right? I don't intend to oc my 3700X as it's not really worthwhile with ryzen.

How do i know about inconsistent power delivery? System crashes?

Thanks for all the input guys. I guess i'll keep it for the next few years as i don't indend to upgrade anything besides my 1080Ti in the near future.

Your PSU is fine for your current system, even with overclocking.

I tend to get a new power supply with every major full PC upgrade, so around once every 5-6 years maybe?

Unless we see a sudden revolution when it comes to PSUs, I'd say you'll be good with an RM650x for quite some time. There's a reason why it's got a 10 year warranty on it.
