Have I wasted my money?

I have built a rig with an RTX 2070
Ryzen 5 2600x
1 Boot SSD and some Hard drives for the less demanding games
16 GB DDR4 3200Mhz RAM.


After hearing the new Xbox and PC Specs, I feel like I have spent a butt ton of money after saving for so long (as i'm 14, so small jobs and chores paid for this machine) for the same sort of gaming performance I would get on the new console, and whilst the argument for upgradability for PC does come into play, I won't have that kind of value to buy say a new gen Graphics card along with a faster CPU etc. So I'm curious to know whether or not i have just spent a lot of money for a PC where i could have gotten the same performance on the xbox, and whilst I know that personally PC has my favourite exclusives, along with the ability to do things such as web browsing, programming and video editing, would it have just been better to buy a console?

Kidding - however if you feel that way, then you have buyers remorse.  If you have buyers remorse than you are not satisfied with the results.  

 

What results from your PC are you not satisfied with?  Its expandability?  Its frame rates?  Its loading times?  Its "future proof"?  Its price tag?

I am more than satisfied with my results, this machine is a beast. But ive owned it just under a year, will it seriously after that short period be no more than "average" so to speak?

does it matter what other people see it like or consider it like? does it matter that it becomes "mid-range" if you're happy with it and does everything you need it to?

That's the nature of PC hardware. What is new today, is old tomorrow.

 

It's the same with consoles, though. That XBOX will look pretty sweet when it launches, but what about in 2 years? 5 years?

It depends how necessary and important the reasons you listed in you question are to you. 
 

I’d say no, but if you are only using it for games, enjoy playing the games with a controller or whatever MS will allow, and would have been fine with waiting, then yes.

Not at all. What I am saying is would it have been a better overall choice to wait for console and buy that instead? I'm 14, that extra 250 or more pounds is a LOT of money to me.

In which case question answered. I use it to listen to music, play a couple of pc exclusives, I do a small amount of beginners programming and using the web, so i suppose overall it was a better idea.

Your graphics card is great, you won't need to upgrade for quite some time. Yes, it will become "average" eventually, all hardware does. You definitely did not waste your money here. The only upgrade I see you potentially wanting is a new CPU in 2-3 years.

This is an unrealistic expectation.

Playing with a controller for a game requiring precision aim is an awful experience. An Xbox can't load up art programs, 3D modeling programs or much of anything besides gaming and Netflix/Hulu.

@PCMasterRaceFTWWW so to answer your question, no you are set for at least a year or two with the current GPU and CPU setup, to be honest you can upgrade half the parts in your system in two years again and be set again for a few years ahead. With a console you cannot run older titles even if you felt like it unless they were remastered for those consoles. The GPU will run even the most demanding games in high graphics, the CPU is fine as well, you might need to upgrade it in two years I think but still that is more than enough to save for a motherboard and CPU plus we are sure Ryzen 3000 series will be pretty affordable by that time. So don't worry. You did not make a mistake.

what more, games on pc are usually cheaper, so you'll get your money back in the long term. plus, being on am4, you can upgrade cpu and gpu and have a decent system for many years to come

Okay, this is good to hear. By two years i should have more than enough to at least upgrade the processor. its what makes me happy that i went AMD. All the way up to R9 they use AM4. My board im pretty sure has R9 support so in the next 2 years i could possibly buy an r9, maybe an extra amount of ram and upgrade that GPU when needed. Thanks for the help everyone

I have these thoughts time to time on some hardware choices too,. absolute enthusiastic expansion.

However once the Xbox gets released and say enjoy it for what it does,.. New PC hardware would still come out and then (like me) the mouth starts watering again...

It's normal IMO for many people to feel the way you do, but hardware always evolves and it's the endless cycle, I hope the take away is that its a mindset that can be temporary once you get into it a few times and realize the rinse and repeat of it all.

It’s not as well done as in the PC, but Backwards compatibility seems to be a pretty big thing for Xbox. While it does take work on Microsoft’s side, it should be easier next generation, the 360 is pretty well supported and there are even a few original Xbox title supported, like Star Wars battlefront.

not sure if that exists, but all b450 boards from gigabyte are quite bad. you can run a 6 core and maybe an 8 core at stock (no OC), but it would throttle a 10 or 12 core quite hard.

yes, the non-m version.

you can overclock a 6 core.

you can run an 8 core at stock.

can't really run a 10 or 12 core without impacting performance/overheating/throttling
